Help with a 300 RUM
« on: August 07, 2008, 04:18:09 PM »
I just recently came across a Rem. 700 in 300 RUM.  Its very nice gun, stainless with laminate stock got it for $500,  Not real big on the stainless & laminate stock.(kinda prefer walnut & blued).  But here is my problem guys.  I have the lee hand held primer tool, and the case will not fit in the primer tool.  I have the whole lee set of shell holders for the primer seater tool.  It fits fine in shell holder, but when I put the shell holder in the primer tool, and slide the case in it hangs about half way.  It looks like the case is too big around the fit in the narrow opening of the primer tool.  Is it becase the rim is rebated or what?  My brothers 375 H&H works fine in it, and they use the same shell holder(#5).  I tried it today too to make sure.  Is there another part I'm gonna need? If so please let me know so I can order it.  Thanks guys and good luck this year. Andrew

I was just looking at my LEE priming tools to see if I could figure out what's going on.
My newer model has obvious less finishing quality than the older one and the opening where your shell goes is definately smaller on the new one.

You might try grinding just a wee tad bit from the sides as shown in this picture in the blue highlighted area.

Good luck!

Bill

EDIT: After looking at the 300 RUM dimensions, I would have to grind both of my primer tools to accomodate the .550" case diameter.

I had to grind the opening on my Lee priming tool to get a RUM case to fit, just like Bill suggested, and a little off the back too I think.  If you have a dremel tool it's quick and easy.

I recall buying a new shell holder when I got a 300WSM.  Call Midway.

Thanks for the help guys.  I have a dremel tool, and I will try this as soon as I get a chance.  And good luck this season!

Just for your info. I have one of the older and one of the newer RCBS hand priming tools . The newer one has the universal shell holder which is pretty convenient. The 300 RUM cases fit in both. I keep the older one set up for small rifle primers (for my .223) and the newer one I use for my large rifle primer loads.
