forming 7-30 from .32 win spl.
« on: July 31, 2008, 02:21:35 PM »
im sure this has probably been covered here more than once but i have a few questions. ive had a contender in 7-30 for a few years now but my cache of 7-30 headstamped brass is slowly diminishing. i have a few hundred .32 cases sitting around and no rifle to shoot them in so i figured i would form the 7-30 brass from it so as not to mix it up with my 30-30 brass. my questions are as follows:

1 - should i lube the outside of the necks as well as the entire body?
2 - should i run them through a .30-30 die before the 7-30?
3 - should i trim them to a uniform length before sizing?

thank you for any information you can offer.

You may want to Annell the case necks before you size them , also runing them into the 30/30 is not a bad idea , there is less chance of the necks folding over onto themselves by doing it in steps .

Remember your going to have to fireform the cases too as the 7x30 is longer from the rim to the shoulder than the 32 Win Spl.

And use pleanty of lube on the body as well as the inside & outside of the necks .

yes
yes
no - trimming before sizing does nothing for you.

anneal first as mentioned, it will size better with fewer problems and it will fire form better without splits

I have formed 25-35 Winchester from 30-30 Winchester and I find if I anneal the brass first, it folds at the shoulders, so I now anneal after sizing to soften the brass before firing to prevent neck splits.  I only use once fired 30-30 Winchester brass before forming to the 25-35 Winchester, because I have found new brass is too soft and the shoulder folds.

I have formed 7-30 Waters from 30-30 Winchester brass and its no different then regular sizing procedures.  You are not radically forming brass as I am with the 25-35 Winchester, so once fired or new brass works fine.  Also since you will produce a false shoulder its OK, since the case can headspace off the rim or shoulder, no worries.

Use case lube, but use it sparingly, you will get lube dents if you use too much.

You can size in a 30-30 Winchester die first, but its not necessary.  The 32 Winchester Special isn't much different then the 30-30 Winchester.

Also, you will need to fireform to get true 7-30 Waters cases, but you can certainly hunt as you are fireforming brass you just won't have the powder space until its fireformed.
