20 Ga. Powder
« on: June 13, 2008, 05:50:53 AM »
May I ask, What are the best powders for 20 ga's reloading? I got a new 1100 20ga to take advantage of the 20 ga good ammo prices in late August. Last year's ammo prices were cheaper than I could reload for my 28 ga. I normally shoot 28 and 410 ga's for skeet. It has been a long time since I loaded for 20 gauges. I want to try out the 20 ga. 1100 and need some reloading powders. I know there is a lot of new powders out now. I don't know which powders are clean burning or not. Thanks for your input. Twyman

I've stopped shooting the 20 really but most of what I've loaded over the years was with 14.5 grains of Green Dot under 7/8 oz loads of shot in both Remington and Winchester hulls. Double check the correct amount of course for your specific components but in both 28 and 20 gauge I've loaded more Green Dot than all others combined. I did switch just before stopping using the 20 to Winchester Super Field and found it to be an excellent choice as well and especially so in Winchester AA hulls.

Those two are what I've loaded in over 90% of my 20 gauge reloads I suspect.

I'm using Hodgdon International for my 20 gauge with good results. It seems like the 20 gauge recipes are pretty tight and I had some problems adjusting my MEC 650 press to get good loads. I find that the Remington STS and gun club hulls reload much better than the AAs in 20 gauge.

I have had good results with Solo 1250, it is bulky but very clean burning and works well in an auto. Shotgunner
