What leadership we have.

House Dems turn out the lights but GOP keeps talking

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democrats adjourned the House, turned off the lights and killed the microphones, but Republicans are still on the floor talking gas prices.

Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) and other GOP leaders opposed the motion to adjourn the House, arguing that Pelosi's refusal to schedule a vote allowing offshore drilling is hurting the American economy. They have refused to leave the floor after the adjournment motion passed at 11:23 a.m., and they are busy bashing Pelosi and her fellow Democrats for leaving town for the August recess.

At one point, the lights went off in the House and the microphones were turned off in the chamber, meaning Republicans were talking in the dark. But as Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz..) was speaking, the lights went back on and the microphones were turned on shortly afterward.

But C-SPAN, which has no control over the cameras in the chamber, has stopped broadcasting the House floor, meaning no one was witnessing this except the assembled Republicans, their aides, and one Democrat, Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio), who has now left.

Only about a half-dozen Republicans were on the floor when this began, but the crowd has grown to about 20, according to Patrick O'Connor.

"This is the people's House," said Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.). "This is not Pelosi's politiburo."

Democratic aides were furious at the GOP stunt, and reporters were kicked out of the Speaker's Lobby, the space next to the House floor where they normally interview lawmakers.

"You're not covering this, are you?" complained one senior Democratic aide. Another called the Republicans "morons" for staying on the floor.

Update: The Capitol Police are now trying to kick reporters out of the press gallery above the floor, meaning we can't watch the Republicans anymore. But Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) is now in the gallery talking to reporters, so the cops have held off for a minute. Clearly, Democrats don't want Republicans getting any press for this episode. GOP leaders are trying to find other Republicans to rotate in for Blunt so reporters aren't kicked out.

Update 2: This message was sent out by Blunt's office:

"Although this Democrat majority just adjourned for the Democrat 5-week vacation, House Republicans are continuing to fight on the House floor. Although the lights, mics and C-SPAN cameras have been turned off, House Republicans are on the floor speaking to the taxpayers in the gallery who, not surprisingly, agree with Republican energy proposals.

"All Republicans who are in town are encouraged to come to the House floor."

Update 3: Democrats just turned out the lights again. Republicans cheered.

Update 4: Republican leaders just sent out a notice looking for a bullhorn, and leadership aides are trying to corral all the members who are still in town to come speak on the floor and sustain this one-sided debate.

Also, Republicans can thank Shadegg for turning on the microphones the first time. Apparently, the fiesty Arizona conservative started typing random codes into the chamber's public address system and accidentally typed the correct code, allowing Republicans brief access to the microphone before it was turned off again.

"I love this," Shadegg told reporters up in the press gallery afterward. "Congress can be so boring. ... This is a kick."

Ain't gonna happen. Think things are in a mess now? Wait till next year when all the liberals have put Obama in as president and he has a democratic congress to give him what he wants. It's what you get in a democracy when consertatives and even moderates are out numbered by liberals and the national news medial is controlled by liberals.

Speaking of responsible people, didn't the slate of presidential want to be's really thrill you when they started running. What a bunch of duds.

There's no one to blame, but the voters.  There were plenty of candidates who were far better than those who the voters picked and that's the problem with our primary system.  I believe that only real card carrying party members should be involved in picking "party candidates."  And it should be done at the convention and it shouldn't cost the state a dime.  Anyone else would be free to stick their name on the ballot for a reasonable fee.

It has gotten so ridiculous in my state that our primary elections now are run where the top two vote getters are the ones who will run against each other in the general.  In other words, it could end up being two people from the same party running against each other in the general election.

I think the fix was in.
We were stuck with Hillary the globalist, european socialist.
Then there is BHO, a globalist, and Lord knows what all.
And there is McCain, a liberal globalist.
We have had W. for the past 8 years, a globalist, selling out our country to foreign interests.
Prior to that we had Clinton for 8 years, a globalist, selling us out to the Chinese.
Prior to that we had G.B. sr, he was the first to openly state "New World Order".

I felt good that we had a few Republicans show some balls, and stand up to the fascist dictator, Pelosi, and her sssssssstupid, idiotic, cowardly, insane, jerk-off, feminazis and girly men minions.
For a moment, it seemed that there might be hope.  But it will not last long.
Our leadership has lost touch with the American people.  How obvious can it be?  We have been sold out to something, I'm not quite sure what.  ( I do have some ideas though )
There is supposed to be a system of checks and balances, 3 branches of government, elected representatives in 2 of those branches deciding issues by casting votes.
We should have a media acting as a watchdog for the American public.  What we have are lapdogs, carrying the water for a bunch of corrupt socialists.
I'm getting fed up to here.  I am concernced what this will eventually lead to.

This little incident just shows what a bunch of little babies we have in Congress.  The petty, little infighting doesn't get any of us anywhere.  Their so caught up in their little world, that you and I are neglected.

lrs, you brought up the bigger picture, though.  All of these politicians are "sold out" to someone. Most times, there is very little overall difference between the 2 parties.  they may bicker back and forth, but at the end of the day, we're the ones getting screwed.

What are your opinions on who we've been sold out to? Where are we specifically headed?

the biggest problem is that the no one fears our vote anymore. the people could vote for whom ever they want for president  then the electoral collage could oer ride that . we need to make them fear our vote again. then you would see more action and less bickering

Instead of worrying about the electoral college, let's use our vote in local, school board, judges retainments, State and Congressional elections.  None of these use the electoral college for incumbants and candidates for an override.

yes we can vote and change things, but it will take years. its a slow process. pelosi needs to go NOW. she has blocked every thing that is critical to the american people. why? i repeat again, any, vote, on anything that will help the american people has been blocked by her.anyone else noticed this?i enjoy the benefits of being a civilized people. however, if pitchforks and torches are what they demand to change things then soon we may have to step up.seems about half of washington{and im being conservative} needs a serious ass whupping.drill here and drill now and close the border to save us whats here already. the majority has spoken already but they ignore?how can they keep ignoreing?

I'm with the chairman on this one. everyone "serving" in wash needs arrested and their finances gone thru with a fine tooth comb and then jailed for taking bribes then the people doing the bribes should be given adjoning cells.the whole of congress elected and all lawyers excluded from being a canidate. Only retired people allowed to run, the pay cut by 3/4, their health system and retirement put in the social security system. strict term limits enforced. Only people that have held real jobs and worked for a honest living allowed to run. then we might stand a chance of getting this mess squared away.
