Just wondering if anyone has any experience with it...Wiki says its a good hunting round

Actually an excellent cartridge for a lot of things.

Two of the 3 other people I hunted antelope with last fall used Encore 25/06 rifles. All told, the 25/06 took 10 antelope with no problem.

At the time of the antelope expedition, I had two 25/06 barrels for my Encore but hadn't mounted a scope on either one so didn't take either one. Since then, I mounted a scope on one and worked up a load for it using Berger 115 gr. VLD bullets. A couple of weeks ago I used it to take a deer at a bit over 200 yards. It was a "Texas Heart Shot" that entered the rear part of a rear leg and put the deer down shortly. I would say it's an excellent deer cartridge.

You'll find countless praises for the 25-06.
I don't have a rifle in this, but think it's close to an ideal deer round.

Unless you are shooting Manitoba monsters at long ranges it is arguably the best thin-skinned game animal cartridge available. You will not be disappointed if you decide to get a 25-06 barrel.

That's what I was hoping to here. I should have mentioned that I was looking at a 15" encore barrel chambered in 25-06. How's the performance out of this length barrel?

Deduct 25 to 50 fps for each inch the barrel is shortened and you'll have a ballpark figure on the performance. I believe the Hornady manual may have handgun 25/06 loads and, if so, that could give you a little more precise information.

Even with a shorter barrel, it should still be adequate for deer to at least 200 yards. Most people don't shoot deer with handguns at more than 200 yards anyway.

I have owned 7 2506s. My first in 1971. I have reloaded thousands of rounds for this caliber, and it is one of the most versatile and is by nature accurate. It is when properly loaded MATCH GRADE.
Lots and lots of coyotes over the years. Some BEYOND 600 yards A large Tom Bobcat is standing in here watching me type this post, that has met one of my 2506s. He was killed inside 45 yards with a 87 grain TNT. There was no exit wound.
Lots of deer, and I would not with the right bullet hesitate on elk. I have taken out the lungs and heart of deer with this round, and on several close shots (inside 100 yards) have literally decapitated a couple.
I have killed VERY LARGE feral hogs with the round beyond 350 yards, and never hesitated.
Excellent round. A re loaders dream.

I generally like short action bolt guns, but in a single shot gun, the long cartridges have no disadvantage. I think the 25-06 comes into it's own in a single shot break open or falling block action. I would certainly choose the 25-06 over any 6 MM cartridge in any situation for deer. Hmmm..If they just made a fast twist barrel and 140 grain bullets, I think it would make a dandy Elk slayer.

NEF/H&R makes 26" barrels for two calibers. I wonder why

Seems to me that most any cartridge is capable for putting down a deer, some are illegal, others a bit on the puny side, others are more then what you need, but all in all most would work so the 25-06 is certainly capable.

You are correct, since I said the 25-06 Remington is an excellent long range Antelope/Deer cartridge and also very capable to take Elk with the right bullet construction and reasonable distance and if you happen to miss, its all my fault. JK, LOL.

I reload for the 25-35 Winchester and my friends 257 Weatherby and 257 caliber bullets ore always gone off the shelves.

I would say the 25-06 Remington is effective past 200 yards or more, but that all depends on your ability to shoot.

The 243 Winchester is good.

I have the 7mm-08 Remington on my 15" T/C Encore barrel with excellet results with 140 grain bullets.

You can also tailor a heavier or lighter bullet for the 7mm-08 Remington, if you are after Antelope to Elk.

There is nothing wrong with a good 160 grain Nosler Partition for Elk within a reasonable range.

Don't get many elk here in NE Georgia...mostly small to medium sized deer...the biggest buck I have evern seen here was probably 150 pounds. He's on the wall

In fact, I just bought a 15" 243 barrel...might get a 25-06 soon, too.

Hey All

I shoot an encore 25-06 with a factory heavy barrel that I had cut to 16.25" and have had a kill shot out to 383yds according to laser. Deer dropped right where it stood. 117's bagged and tagged it like it was 50 yds. I agree by the numbers shortning the barrel decreases your velocity but I don't believe the deer know this. Total of about ten deer since I shortend the barrel. I would highly recomend the 25 for deer and would not worry about short barrels from a hunting standpoint.

Sure, several - what was the muzzle velocity of your handload? Where in the "chest" did the bullet hit? Was it an angling shot, or a direct broadside? How much meat was lost? Did the bullet exit? Why did you use a varmint bullet on a big game animal?

50.5 gr of 4350, I forget the velocity off the top of my head. Direct broadside. Zipped thur both lungs, bullet exited. Dammage was less than what 125gr Vortex broad heads do.

Old times tell stories of taking deer with 22lr... I know guys that use .223 for deer...

.223 IS EXCELLENT DEER ROUND WITH FEDERAL 55 GR. BEARCLAW. I killed 4 with four shots. You must pick your shots. ALL bullets exited on broadside shots. I repeat, you must pick your shots and keep shots within 200 yards. My four kills were all within 125 yards.

Amen rebailey1... just cause you carry a 300WSM (or other new fangled high powered rifle, sorry guys ) in the woods dosent mean your going to hit what you aim at. The biggest thing for putting meat in the freezer is hitting what you shooting at.

IMO a medium powered rifle that you shoot very very well and you know its boundaries is 10x better than some 240grn heavy hitter that you shoot 5-10 rounds a year out of.
