Just bought it...as new in box.
Had one last year that I paid $30 for at a gunshow in about 85% condition...sold that one for $100.

Gonna keep THIS one....:cool:

 That's a shiny one, never saw one in that good of shape. My dad carried one in Vietnam.

Had one just like it many long years ago. I don't honestly remember just what happened to it but sure wish I still had it. I used to carry it in the woods and used it much like a machete to good effect. I expect if I ran across one I'd pick it up as well.

any idea what kind of steel they made of? id like a nice bowie but really cant go stainless on a knife that big and hard to sharpen.

Don't know...someone told me some were carbon, some stainless...doesn't say anything on it...just "WESTERN W49"

The early W49's were carbon steel.  Towards the end Western/Camillus switched over to 420 stainless.
About the only way to tell, I reckon, is to do a rust test on it.

I carried one in Kosovo, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan and a few other places we never were. It has rust that pops through the black painted blade on occasion. Very easy to keep shaving sharp. An old timer told me the steel was comparable to carbon v and the same case used to use, don't know but it held up well to abuse.

All carbon V is, is Cold Steel's marketing name for 50100-B; a readily available tool steel. Used to be known as 0176 also, but the company that used that designator went out of business. 50100-B is a nice steel.  Anyone who owns a yellow handled Case with the Chrome Vanadium blade(like me for instance) is using that particular steel.  Holds a nice edge for a carbon steel, and does re-sharpen easily.

I carried a knife like this in Vietnam. Unfortunately it is a little worse for wear now.
