Taking down my model 74 autoloader.
« on: June 08, 2008, 03:23:46 AM »
I have a model 74, it's cheaper version of the 7400. I'm wondering what is the proper way to clean the gas port and remove the trigger assembly. Is a special tool needed to knock the trigger pins out or with a standard punch do? Thanks

I figured out how the get the trigger assembly out, it was real easy with a punch and a mallet. I used a small pipe cleaner and some Hoppes on the gas port. I might get someones junker 742 and figure out how to get the bolt and barrel off and maybe even back on once I get the headspace figured out. Semiautos where made for me, I love to tinker stuff.

Try and find an older, mid sixty's 742 owners manual.  They have complete instructions on how to fully take down a 742.  74 series rifles should be awful close.

If you'll call Remington, they'll send you a reprint of the owner's manual at no charge.

Don't believe I'd take the barrel off.  Leave that to a gunsmith.  Probably not necessary anyway.

A good way to clean your trigger group is to first put a large plastic bowl in the microwave and get the water very hot.  Remove it from the microwave.  Add a liberal amount of degreaser or solvent of your choice.  Drop in the trigger group.  Using a wooden dowel placed through the trigger guard, spin the assembly round and round in the bottom of the bowl in the hot solution.  Old grease will come to the top.  Pour it off then remove the trigger assembly.  Shake off excess water and allow it to cool and dry on a paper towel.  The very small amount of moisture will quickly evaporate from the hot trigger group.  Once it is dry, lightly spray a thin gun oil on the assembly to prevent rust.
