Illnesses from Ticks and other Bugs
« on: August 15, 2008, 07:34:33 PM »
Although this post may not fit into this particular discussion, I am discussing what may be very important as people start to enter the woods for what ever reasons this coming up season. The question is how many people have or know someone who has gotten an illness from ticks or any other bugs. Please let us know what kind of bug it was and what the illness from it was, and if possible what environment it was such as just back yard garden or deep woods. For those that actually have gone deep into the woods, if you picked up ticks/ bugs how many were you able to find on your body and whether or not you gotten ill. I will post this in other discussions to reach the greatest number of users. I understand that this may be getting into privacy issues but I think it would be very informative and educational for myself and others. Thanks.

I have a cousin and Great aunt, that have both contracted Lymes disease. They farm and picked it up from ticks.
When Lymes disease first came to this area, I went and had the shots for prevention. It was 3 shots given over a year period.I pick up my ticks when spring beaver trapping, so far --so good , for me.
As trappers , most of us wear latex gloves when skinning animals, this puts a barrier between us and many animal carried diseases.

a buddy came down the other day to do sum gun tradeing and he had a fellow with him, seemed like a real nice guy. he was telling me about his contracting of rocky mtn spotted tick fever. the story he told was absolutely horrifying. the difficulty in getting properly diagnosed, the horrible symptoms, pain and disability he faced was just unreal.he caught it early last spring and said he is still suffering lingering affects and was completely incapacitated for at least 3 mon and not sure if he wouldnt suffer some affects the rest of his life.it made lyme disease look like a bad cold.he lives in sw mo as i do. boys be carefull, dont go out in tick season without spraying down with repellent. he lived in a wooded area and thinks he may of picked it up in his own yard.he said the first symptom was his skin feeling weird, sensative, painfull etc.
