barrel brake in
« on: September 15, 2008, 11:50:49 AM »
Just like to know your way of braking in a new barrel.I have seen a couple of ways, and seen guys at the range doing all kinds of things. So which way is right? I think my way is doing the job, For the first 10 shots I clean  the bore after every shot, then after that I clean every 2 then 3 in so on tell I get to ten. Then I use JB paste in stroke it 100 times or more and then before I  shot it I clean it with a clean patch to the extra paste out of the bore.

The new barrel I had made to put on my 700 in 243 he told me about like you clean after every shot for the 1st 10 then clean after every 2 shots for the other 10.
on my barrel I notice by the time I got the first 8 shot I only used half the patches to get clean between
shots and it just keeps geting better and used less patches as went. seems to work for me anyway.

Yeah.....this one is all over the charts. I've not been one that goes thru a ritual of break in for new barrels. Never did and I keep all my rifles....at least up to this point. But I've "bent" a bit on the last few I've bought and cleaned after about every 5 shots for the first 50 shots.

I really can't tell you if has made a difference in barrel cleaning. It doesn't appear to have made a difference in accuracy.

No matter what I always clean before the first shot.  I am amazed at the junk you can pull out of a new gun.  I don't see how the slug forcing all the chips and grit out the barrel can do a fine machined surface any good.  I take the action apart on most guns as well and deburr, cleanup, and lube.
