Well, I spent the money.... time to spend more.
« on: July 29, 2008, 12:43:44 PM »
So I went ahead and bought the 7mm ultra mag.  Remington 700 SPS.

It's for the lady, so now I need to get a wood stock to shorten... put the muzzle brake on it...  mounts, rings, scope, etc, etc, etc.  -Of course keep that synthetic stock in the normal length for when I..  "borrow" it.

Has anyone noticed, that the accesories most of the time end up totaling more than the gun itself costs?  Or is that just me?

Keep an eye on ebay.  That's where I get most of my good deals.

When you want to make the gun your own and start switching parts it get expensive really quick.  Usually about the same cost of the gun after a stock, trigger, sights, recoil pad, whatever.....  It seems to me that shooting and hunting is starting to become a rich mans sport if it's not already.

KNow what you mean about accessories.  Bought a Mod 70 Win a few years ago and couldn't get the trigger at a crisp 3lbs.  Wound up getting a Jewell trigger installed.  Total of gunsmith and Jewell trigger exceeded the deal I got on the rifle.  Needless to say, the scope was over double the riffle's cost.

The best example I have is buying a Marlin 1895.  I had a gunsmith put a recoil pad on it ($100), I put a winged rear peep sight on it ($130), and then put a scout mount on it ($50).  Almost another $300 to get it where I wanted the gun to be.  Then I never found the load it liked and the recoil was still too much, so I sold it at a painful loss.  Live and learn I guess.  Anymore I'm just trying to get to where I have less guns and know them better.

Good glass is a whole lot cheaper than it used to be.

Rem 700SPS 7mm ultra mag:  $600
Lightly used Rem 700BDL stock, shortened: $75
Nikon buckmasters 4.5-14x: $300
Burris rings and bases: $50
Professional muzzle brake installed: $250

Watching your girlfriend drop a moose in one shot at 300 yards: priceless.

Haven't got the bases or rings in yet... got the scope the other day, I cut down the stock about 1.5", it came used from numrich, I was surprised at how good of condition it actually was in.  Kind of funny a 26" barrel in a 12"LOP stock...
