why does Remington and other manufacturer's put that ebony tip on the fore stock of their rifles ?

I think that they do it to give the rifle more of an appealing look. Many custom gunmakers add a forend tip of Ebony, Rosewood,horn or other contrasting wood.  I don't believe that Remington uses ebony, though, just black painted wood. I could be wrong.

Yep.  Just for looks.  And I must admit, look good it does.  I have only owned one rifle that had an ebony cap (an old Springfield 03-A3 sporter that  I got when I was 14 but later sold b/c it wouldn't shoot), but I do currently have a stock with a rosewood tip/cap that looks nice but I think the ebony looks better.

Actually I think Remington uses a Plastic for their tips as do otehr volums makers. The practice of using a contrasting tip goes way back to muzzle loaders where it matched the contrasting tip to the ram rods. In the last decades of the 19th century and early years of the 20th century Horn was very popular  but unlike the solid blocks they use today the Horn was a thin covering inset into the tip. I am not sure when Rosewood became popular but it certainly was popular by the late 1940's and up through the 1980's. Parker-Hale used it for fore end tips and grip caps as did BSA. On the Continent of Europe Horn was even more popular with whole trigger guards made from it as well as Butt plates and bolt knobs. British gunmakers used Horn for butt plates, there must have been a whole industry making them at one time.

Why ?

The same reason humans have embellished their weapons since the dawn of time - To make the weapon they're proud of pleasing to look at, and to emphasize it's potency.

Especially during those slack times all of us experience at on time or another, and there's nothing else to admire.

That's why I hunt with Hi-Grade rifles - I get extra pleasure from them.

Life's too short, to hunt with an ugly gun.

They do look good on most guns.
I currently have 2 REMINGTON MODEL 30s EXPRESS rifles and 11 WINCHESTER MODEL 70 XTR rifles that have black tips.
