What are you guys doing for food plots?
« on: September 20, 2008, 04:05:13 PM »
I've been doing some reading and had a wildlife biologist who is a friend look over some property.  We discussed habitat improvement for small game and Deer.  This got me to thinking about asking what you guys in the state are doing?  What are you finding success planting?  Are you hunting the plot or hunting the trails leading up to the plots?  What's working for you?

well in sept.  I have been hunting in the alfafa and clover fields.  ladina white clover has worked good and also buck wheat has worked for a friend of mine.

How late in the season do you see the white clover being good feed?  I've heard that it is more cold tolerant than red clover and alfalfa.

Do you guys plant winter crops for late bow and late muzzleloader?

the ladina white clover will last good through a frost.  in late winter i try to hunt cut corn fields or some winter wheat.  also i the farm I hunt there are a lot of hedge apple tree or some people call them osage orange but the deer eat them alot in late winter.

Thanks trophyhunter,
I've been thinking of planting hedge apple for other reasons.  I didn't know about it being good deer food.  Thanks for the tip.
