25ACP and 777 pellets - hang fires
« on: October 18, 2008, 04:28:07 AM »
HELP HELP!
I tried some 777 pellets in my H&R Sidekick today.  Half of my shots were hangfires(1 second delay before iginiton).  I was using 2 50gr pellets and my 25ACP's are primed with small pistol primers.  It ignites 100gr of loose Pyrodex just fine, but I hate the stuff.  With less than a week until ML season, I'm probably stuck with the Pyro, but can anybody think of why the hangfires?

Thanks

is it possible that your pellets have collected some moisture?  If you could pick up some T7 loose think you would like that with with your 25acp - I shoot that combination in my omega.... T7-3f really burns fairly clean also - like it a lot better than pellets
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

209 primers in my NEF will not reliably 100% of the time light 777 pellets, I would never hunt with them in the NEF. 777 pellets do not have the black powder ignition booster bonded to them like pyrodex pellets do, and they absorb moisture like a sponge. Get yourself some 777 loose powder and your problems will go away. 80-85 grains by VOLUME 777 loose is approximately equal to a 100 gr (2 pellet) charge of 777 pellets. Not only will it shoot better, it will cut your powder cost by at least 50%.

I have never had an ignition problem with loose 777 and the .25 ACP plug with CCI 400 Small Rifle Primers.

Thanks for the replies, fellas.  I agree, the loose is better.  I was going for "ease in loading".  ::) .  I should've bought the loose 777.  With the time factor, I guess I'll shoot the Pyro next week and look inot some loose 777 after that.

Magnum primers might help!  I don't like pellets.  I have a few that I plan on using at the range, and that will be the end of 777 pellets for me.

Use Small rifle CCI 400, they are the best I have used. Never had a failure to fire or hang fire using them.
I also used it with loose triple seven powder and had great results.
