Walther P-22
« on: March 12, 2003, 02:05:38 AM »
I got my wife to the gun shop yesterday to look a a small ruger Marrk II that was light enough for her to enjoy shooting.

Well another women in the shop heard our request to the clerk and suggested a Walther P-22.  She said her husband bought one and she confiscated it, and shoots it exclusiively.

It appears to be a neat little gun...dare I say:  FUN.

We are considering the 5 inch model, does anybody have any pros/cons on this firearm?

Thanks

Fred (its for my wife really, but I can still shoot it right?) :D

I bought a p-22 about 9 months ago and although i really like the gun i have had a problem with it not firing occasionally. once in a while it will not fire and when i eject the round and examine it it appears that the firing pin has not struck the cartridge as hard as it should have because the strike mark is very light compared to one that has fired. I have no idea what is going on if anybody has any ideas i would sure listen. But even with that glitch the gun is fun to shoot and looks very cool but it might be a little small for people with big hands. Hope this helps.

Well we bought the P-22 in the 5 inch barrel.  The only ftf that I experienced was on the very first round...I did not shoot it any further that outing and stripped and cleaned it back home.  It has fired reliably for the next 4-500 rounds.

It is not as accurate as some handguns  (it is not my Mark II) but it is fun to shoot and my wife enjoys it and is willing to go to the range with me on occasion.

I did hear that the original version of this gun had a problem with main spring.  S&W is supposed to supply a new spring for this and it may apply to your gun and solve your problem.

I also heard that Wolff spring makes a kit for this gun that will impove trigger pull.  This is something that I want to check out for myself as well.

Good luck

Fred

I bought one of the four inch models and promptly went to a S&W 2213.  Although a great gun for most it was very confusing and busy for me.  I have shot IPSC with a colt and the smith is vey similar in the way the safety and slide release works.  I didn't like the safety on the Walther because it is backward from the smith. The safety is up on the Walther and it will fire. Safety is down on the others and they will fire.  It might be great for a beginner but it gave me fits.  Luck.

I bought one about six months ago, the 5" model and I haven't been impressed with it mostly due to the accuracy. This is the first auto-loader I've had, got a single six that makes nice little groups with anything, Dan Wesson and Blackhawks too.  I don't know if I'm expecting to much or should just stick with revolvers and contenders?

When my wife saw this, she said it was cute.. When she fired it she said it's fun, but when she couldn't hit anything she went back to my single six.

I bought one for a kit gun, it's the perfect size and accurate to boot. Unfortunately it's back at the factory being repaired, it won't cycle for squat. Bummer.

Well we have had the P-22 for about 1200 rounds and 30+days.  It has cycled every time that the ammo has not been a dud.

The gun shoots/cycle wonderful.  It will not group better that 8 inches at 50 feet with the heel of gun on table (not an actual rest).   Obviously other guns are much more accurate.

Overall I am pleased,  it is a "fun" gun and will stay as long as my wife will shoot it.

I recently purchased a Walther P22 at Sportsman's Warehouse. I had shot a couple of them that friends had, and really liked it as a fun gun. It's not on the same level as my S&W K22, or my Hi Standard Supermatic, but still a great little gun for $199!
Mine shoots under 3" at our indoor 50' range, from the sandbags. I got the 3.4" version, as I wanted something that would fit in my back pocket when I'm fishing or hiking. I've fired several hundred rounds through it, with no problems, except for some very light Eley Tenex ammo. It wouldn't fully operate the slide, due to low velocity. All the other standard, or high velocity ammo, regardless of maker, shot and functioned perfectly!
Ballard, the great American Rifles!
