I stopped into the local gun shop today just to chew the cud. Behind the counter were four rifles. Bob said, "I think these are right down your alley, any for $100." I looked first at a Flint Lock and though it was nice I put it down quickly. The next two were 98 Mauser sporters that had been garbaged up but could be nice projects. Then I saw it, (I don't think Bob realized what it was) An InterArms Mauser Mk X action chambered in 7 mag with a plain Jane stock and a 3x9 Redfield Wide Field. I never have $100 in my pocket but my buddy had paid me back for some parts I had bought for him. I handed him the money before he could change his mind!
What can you tell me about Inter Arms. I know it was made in Zastava, Yugoslavia which leads me to believe I have a Bruno. It's cock on open, side safety, but the trigger is a little creepy, a little heavy and has a mile of over travel. The the stock is tight to the barrel and may need floated. I'm going to see if I can fix this trigger or I'll replace it with a Timney.

Interarms was just the importer. The Mark X was just one of the incarnations (albeit the best known) of the manufacturer, whose name escapes me at the moment.

In another guise it was a Chas. Daily. I believe the latest is some 'merican company ... the Marlin/H&R gobblin' green wienie or sumpin like that...

Ida paid half as much again just for the action!

Freezer, That thang ain't worth a crap! I suggest getting rid of it quick! Matter of fact, just because I'm such a nice guy, I'll tke it off your hands so you don't have to worry with the trigger and get all frustrated. Really...I mean it... Call Me or PM me...Really....OKAY??

OKay then, If won't let me help ya out then I'll tell ya this...The MarkX is a great rifle. The ones I've had the pleasure of owning and shooting have all shot great. My youngun got a 7Mag 2 years ago, The Viscount Model I think, and for some reason he won't let me shoot it very often. Might have something to do with all the drool on it after I shoot it. I'm talking ragged holes with just about anything ya stuff in it! I think you're gonna br happy with this rifle.

As for the trigger, most of these had triggers that are fully adjustable for weight and over travel. If you'd like, I can scratch up the Manual for mine and copy the pages on trigger adjustment. Fax right to ya if ya want! Let me know...

Freezer: as AtlLaw already said, Interarms was just the importer. I believe the same rifle came as the BRNO, the Howa, the Charles Daly, possibly the Smith and Wesson, and maybe the newer Remington 798. You may know that the BRNO Mausers are verrry well thought of.

Trigger - if it is not adjustable (and sometimes you find they come with the old standard military Mauser trigger) I would opt to replace it with either a Bold Trigger or Timney Trigger.

And do not listen to huntswithdogs, that poor guy whose own son won't let him drool on, er shoot his. Send it to me instead, with all your ammo and the like and I will tellya whether you got a good buy. Just tryin' to be helpful. Mikey.

My youngest son has an older Savage 110 chambered in 7 mag. Though I have a few boxes loaded for him I'll do my own load work up after I doctor this rifle up a bit. I have at least 100 pieces of new brass and 300 rounds of once fired brass for 7mag. In addition I have both full length and neck size only dies for this caliber. This project gun is going to be too much fun!
I did a little checking around and found this rifle in this condition should sell for $400 to $600. After I'm done with it, it may pay for a few projects I have in mind

When I had my 300WM, it didn't like necksized cartridges. I don't think we've tried it with the younguns rifle yet. My 243 and either of my buddy's 2, don't care one way or the other. These last three are standard based shells and not belted Mags. That may be the differences.

Started the work on it today. I floated the barrrel and relieved the stock where the action hit hard. I'll have to replace the trigger it's not adjustable and is not acceptable. I may bed the action, we'll see how it shoots first. When I sell this thing someone will have a really nice gun.

Did you shoot the rifle before you attacked it with paper and rasps to free float the barrel?

I ask because it seems that very few Americans even think of trying the rifle first.

It's almost a mantra :-

Free Float .................. Free Float

Hmmm I wonder if Townsend Wheelans rifles had floated barrels? No I don't know th answer but will endevour to find out as I believe a memebr on another site actually has oe of his rifles and Wheelan almost worshipped accuracy!

Free floated barrels are a cheap easy production method to get around having a properly cured stock and proper accurate inletting. Let's hope that that rifle likes the barrel floated

not all do as I found out to my cost in time and money with one of mine that required the bedding looking at. By accidently adding too much compound it ended up with a floated barrel and then shot patterns not groups. It now has a properly bedded stock with pressure point at fore end tip and shoots Privi Partesen ammo into around MOA.

Yes I did, 1 1/2" at 100 yards. Not good enough for a 7 mag. No, I didn't attack it. I am judicious with the sand paper and only use a rasp when shaping a stock. This stock was ugly! There were wear marks on the bluing where the action and barel just didn't fit correctly and a chip at the top of the comb from action moving from recoil. I'll bed the action and eliminate that problem. The action also seems a little stiff on closing, since it's a cock on open system there must be dirt in the action. As soon as I finish the stock I'll try to clean that up.

Freezer,

Strip the bolt down. It's probably got gooed up oil in it. The area inside the action where the 2 lugs lock down, get gunked up also.

This one needs both, it was rode hard and put away wet. Like I said this is a project gun. Through the years I've picked up a few basket cases because I hate to see an interesting gun go to waste. That's what this one is. My guns get scratched up and abused but not put away before I fondle them and give them the TLC they deserve. I'll sell this gun cheap to some poor broke butt like me who can appreciate a good utilitarian gun.
I have a Timney trigger on the way and the stock just got it's first coat of oil. One down 7 to go! I ran out of JB's Bore clean so I ordered it with the trigger. Can't wait till it gets here.

Ahhhhhhh you raise another point, trigger replacement

, I have yet to come across a Mauser 98 type trigger which cannot be improved, if it needed such, with a little time and a fine oil stone. You could have saved yourself quite a bit of money there

All the time on the forums I read where they buy a Timney or some such replacement. I am sure most who do so it's because they don't even know where to start and have been cajoled by the "Gunwriters" into believeing that's this is the ONLY way to do it

The Mauser trigger design is actually very good, robust & relible, and can be safely made to have a crisp clean pull of around 3lbs. Even lighter but I wonder about sear engagement at lower pressures. As you might guess none of mine have replacement triggers

we cannot count the Parker-Hales which come mostly with a Timney type trigger as std although my 1100M has the std Mauser trigger which I have re-worked even to altering the curve of the blade to put it futher back in the guard.

The Mk X's are nice actions! But, BRNO's were made in Czechoslovakia.

Gatcat, your right I had done some research. As for the trigger adjustments, Mauser triggers can be tuned but you can't make all the adjustments I want. Though there's little take up the creep and break are not good. I could repair that but not the amount of over travel, it's close to 1/2 inch! In addition the trigger blade feels like a nail. I prefer a wide flat trigger. No for my money I'll use a better trigger that is designed to be adjusted.

Them ain't scratches and dings! They're CHARACTER MARKS! Shows the rest of that they're working guns.

My current MarkX, the ones I sold and my youngun's, all had adjustable triggers. I did note in the owners manual that some didn't come so equipped. A new trigger group is probably best for now.

Timney trigger got here today! Had to modify the stock and reciever to make it fit but what a difference! No take up, creep or over travel and thrre pound pull I noticed the barrel was made by P.O. Ackley Inc. Someone is going to get a fine rifle for cheap!

My deer hunting partner loves 7 mag. His Savage 110 is an old "p"series that he got from his grand father. He's has beaten it up pretty bad through the years and the stock has a crack at the magazine. I took this rifle to his deer camp to site it in. It shot great and was dead on no adjustments needed. when he shot the thumb tack at 75 yards with the first shot and put the second shot half way into the first he wouldn't give it back to me. It's toped with a 3x9 Redfield wide field. He got it for $400. Not a bad deal for either of us.
