Brought a friend into the Handi Rifle world today
« on: August 23, 2008, 01:41:39 PM »
I saw a super deal at a local gun store yesterday, a Handi with a stainless receiver, straight synthetic stocks and a 30-06 extractor barrel with scope rail and hammer extension. It also came with a 20 gauge MOD choke barrel. Both barrels look brand new. All this for $199.

A friend of mine had been talking about getting a Handi after shooting mine and seeing that the Remington 742 30-06 semi-auto that he bought recently shoots like crap. I called him today and we went down to the gun store and the shop owner traded him his 742 even with the Handi.

We plan on shooting it tomorrow after he mounts up his 4X Bushnell scope. It looks like he'll have a nice deer rifle/bird gun combo.

Sounds like a good bargain to me, congrats to him and to you for snagging him!! ;)  Unless it's a special order made this year, the frame is likely nickle plated as they have been for years, the only stainless framed H&R available is on the new this year SS 45-70 Ultra Hunter.

I think your right Quick, It's barrels are blued. What about the stainless barreled Handis? Do those come with a nickel receiver also?

Yes, except the 45-70 Ultra which has the first ever stainless frame. The combo your friend bought may have been one of the 3-barrel combos that was available a couple years ago that had nickle frames, they had a rimfire barrel as the 3rd barrel, but they've also made 2-barrel combos in the past.

Tim

I'm confused.  What the deal with the 270 (SB2-2S7) and 30/06 (SB2-3S6) on their site, then?

They both have nickel plated frames as stated on page 12 of the 2008 catalog. H&R/Remington may choose to offer the new 45-70 Ultra frame on new models, but there will be a substantial price increase for the Handi if they do, the SS 45-70 sells for close to $400.

That's about the lamest thing I've seen in a long time.  Sorry, I don't have the latest catalog.  I do, however, think my next rifle will be the .45-70 UH.
