what reloading press is right
« on: August 19, 2008, 02:27:02 PM »
I suppose this is going to open a hornets nest. I have a lee pro 1000 that i have been loading my 38 and 357. I bought some guys stuff and that is what it was. I did not know it was mainly for pistol rounds. I wanted to do rifle and pistol so i got a used ammo master progressive. My question is should i mount both on the bench or should i invest more and just use the rcbs. The rcbs seems like a lot better setup. I also have a lee single stage that I am doing my 7mm on. Thanks in advance

I use a Pro 1000 for my 9mm, .45 and .38 cause I can crank out a bunch of reasonably consistent rounds in a relatively short time, and switch to an RCBS Rock Chucker for my .30-06 and .243 so I can try to get the best accuracy I can.  Works for me, ymmv.

You have 3 presses and only have 1 mounted on the bench at a time?  I think the problem is that you need a bigger bench.  They all have their uses so why not make them convenient to use?  I have 3 presses, a lube sizer and a case trimmer setup all permanently mounted.  Saves a lot time in excess setup when changing from one caliber to another if nothing else.  And yes, RCBS quality has set a standard by which many others are judged.

I can't comment on the Lee press since I've never used one. The RCBS is definitely a good press that will outlive you. Coupled with RCBS's excellent warranty and how they stand behind their product, you can't go wrong. The only problem with a progressive press is that some people tend to take shortcuts on case preparation.

Though the RCBS is a better press I've loaded ten thousand rounds on my Lee single stage press.  I've loaded everything from 223 to 45-70 and 375 H&H.  I've never had a problem with it.  I think I'd spend my money on dies, brass bullets and powder ;)

"...or should i invest more and just use the rcbs."

You haven't given us enough information.   RCBS sells several presses, which one are you refering too?

And what are you attempting to do with the Lee press that needs help??

Rcba ammo master progressive. The lee is just for pistols. I want to load both rifle and pistol and one press I guess ? I hadn't decided. I am just gonna mount the single stage and both progressive presses. Thanks for the input.

since you HAVE all three presses I think mounting all of them on a bench is the way to go.  The Lee 1000 is a fine economical press. I have loaded 10s of thousands of 45acp on mine with no more than the replacement of parts that do not last long but are also very inexpensive and easy to replace. I have no experience with rcbs but they have an excellent reputation

I prefer single stage press for rifle ammo.  I want the most consistant accurate loads possible so I trickle charge every load.  I also trickle charge my handgun hunting loads buy not my plinking loads.
