308 seating depth for factory ammo
« on: August 22, 2008, 09:53:36 AM »
Hi guys,

I was just wondering if anyone out there can tell me what the OCL is for a factory federal premium 165gr Ballistic tip and a 165gr Barnes TSB(no tip). I'm working on a new rifle and I want to start at factory lengths as I don't have a length gauge handy and I don't have those factory rounds right now. I don't really feel like buying ammo just to measure them. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Rob...

Sorry I only handload so no factory stuff on the shelf.  But without a caliper knowing the OAL won't help you anyway.  The longest you will find will be in the 2.810 range, although there are some 308s that will demand shorter.  If you dont have a caliper then you are left with loading a cartridge and then trying to chamber it.  Start long and then keep seating the bullet a little deeper at a time until it chambers.  You will also have to check the cartridge in your magazine as some magazines are shorter than the rifle chamber.   Bottom line is get a caliper.  It will make your life a lot more certain and maybe a lot safer.

This is a new 308 Remington model 700.  I have been loading a 308 Sako for the last 15 years.  I have loaded 165 gr. NBT's for that particular gun and they shoot very well with an OCL of 2.775.  Now, I have dummy rounds loaded at that length with 165 gr. BT'S and 165 gr Barns TSB at a length of 2.800.  The Barnes will not chamber in this gun and the NBT are a little tight closing the bolt.  I want to start out at a factory length because they are supposed to work in any gun.  I am not looking for tack driving accuracy(I will be happy with 1 1/2 groups) so I'm not worried about being close to the rifling.  I just need a factory measurement as a starting point.
