Double rifle for round ball.
« on: April 15, 2008, 05:46:05 AM »
The English, in the late 19th century made  breech loading double rifles expressly for shooting round ball . I am assuming that the twist would be rather slow as in a m-loader. I have never heard about ball dia. versus land and grove dia. Is the ball supposed to be .001 to .002 larger than the grooves as in a "bullet barrel??? What is the depth of the rifliing????  Thanks, Ed

The "roundball" rifles were generally "gauge" rifles, that is to say the bore size was designated by the gauge system like, 4,8,10,12 & 16 gauge rather than caliber in hundredths of an inch. Generally only the largest bores were fired with round balls, 10 gauge and smaller bores usually fired short conical bullets. I would assume, but do not "know", that bullets and balls were full groove diameter or slightly over, just like any other breech loading rifle.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
