Best Bullet for 308 w/ 1:11 twist
« on: August 31, 2008, 02:43:22 PM »
I've just purchased a 308 rifle with a 1:11 twist.  It has a short 20" barrel.  I was wondering if there is a good rule of thumb for bullets with that rate of twist?  Also, as I am new to the 308 does anyone have any recommendations on good powders for it?

Thanks,

Bob

I have 3 308's. I think my twist would be the standard for the round, 1/10, or 1/12. I forget what the standard twist rate is for the 308. I usually use 165grn bullets. For deer hunting I get by fine with Hornaday 'interlock' type SP's, or Sierra Gamekings.

There are many good powders in the medium/fast range that work well in the 308. If I was to load today I would look to Varget,H4895, or Ramshot TAC. Those are a few powders I like & have on hand.

Hmmmm, standard 06 twist is 1:10, standard 308 twist is 1:12.  My 06s love 180s, the only 308 I had wouldn't shoot 180s worth a dang but loved 150s and 165s. A 1:11 twist will probalby work with most any bullet weight.  You just have to try it and see.  Mikey.

Bob,

From the Shilen website:  http://www.shilen.com/calibersAndTwists.html

.308
- 8" for bullets heavier than 220gr.
- 10" for bullets up to 220gr.
- 12" for bullets up to 170gr.
- 13"* Ratchet rifled 4 groove
- 14"* for bullets up to 168gr.
- 15"* for bullets up to 150gr.
- 17"* for bullets up to 125 gr.

For powders, I'd go with either IMR 4064, IMR 4895 or Varget.  On a side note, the U.S. Army a decade ago specified IMR 4895 for their M852 Match round.  Don't know if that still holds true today.

Best,
Brian
