Water water everywhere.
« on: August 26, 2008, 05:13:04 AM »
Well guys tropical storm Fay seems to like it around here and doesn't seem to want to leave. After the first round of it I dumped a bit less than 3" from my rain gage and my pond picked up about a foot of water from the run off.

But then she got serious and really dumped on us. Right now my rain gauge is full and likely has over flowed and the blueberry buckets are all full and likely have over flowed. We have a couple of wash tubs a #2 and a smaller one Faye uses to put weeds in when she weeds the flower gardens. They are full and likely over flowed.

I rode down to look my pond over and it's completely out of banks. The area between the state road and my pond is all just water. Normally even when the water is over flowing from the over flow ditch there is foot or more of bank above the water but not today it is just a standing body of water all the way to the highway right of way. All the pastures are standing in water and in the low lying areas there is a nice stream flowing thru them.

I've never in the 14 years we've lived here seen the water so high. I can't say how much rain has fallen as everything outside that holds water is full and I'm sure has over flowed and guess what it's not done yet it appears. I know we've had at least 9" to 10" counting what's in my rain gauge today and what I've already dumped.

Me thinks the drought is over.

Wish I had some of that.  Had to dig some holes yesterday about 24" deep and never did detect any moisture.  I literally made dust all the way to the bottom.  Not a drop here for 2 months. :(

They better have learned to swim by now cuz they can't walk around on the bottom of the pond like last year. This time last year we were walking around and of course Matt was on the four wheeler in the bottom of the west cove of the pond. This year it's full and over flowing. In the above photos that cove we walked around on bottom of last year is likely under 7' of water.

GB I was wondering how big of a pond that is? Is 7 feet the deepest part? Thanks Dale

Nope that's the shallowest part where this time last year we were walking around on the dry bottom. That area at full pool has close to 5' of water but today it was WAY above full pool level. The deepest areas at full pool are perhaps 12' deep and the east cove has much of it's area in the 8' to 10' depth at full pool. I estimate the pond at about three quarters of an acre. The peninsula juts way out into it and if it were not for that it would be a full acre I'm sure.

Boy that is for sure a nice size pond!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;) We have an acre here where I live so I have a good idea how big it is. When I lived up on the mountain our comunity had a lake that was 3 acres. I grew up there as a boy. Some of the best times of my life. I caught my first Large Mouth Bass out of that lake and my daughter caught her first fish out of it too. We no longer live there but I sure do miss that lake. As a kid I fished it, swam it, and ran around it on my dirt bike. I even walked all over it in the winter. I did fall through the ice one time though when I was a kid but that is another story. I always said if I hit the lottery I am buying a couple hundred acres with a lake. I would build a house there. How are your Tomatoes growing? I hear they when it gets past 90 degrees they stop growing. I would like some first hand experience on this. Dale

DALE. The tomatoes are doing well, only have 7 plants. WE have plenty to eat and share with friends and neighbors. I have 3 celebrity plants, they are loaded with fruit and still blooming. 2 plants are from seed from Egypt. Strange plants, lighter in color and more sparse with the vines but have large fruit, a few blooms left. Fruit is really meaty, delicious. The last 2 are TREE tomatoes. I'd seen em advertised for lots of years so I bought a couple of them. Disappointing plants, not even close to what they advetise, as ar as height goes, maybe 4 ft tall, great tasting tomatoes, remind me of a ponderosa pink with lots of meat instead of all seed. The 3 celebrity plants have really out produced all 4 of the other plants, and are still loaded with green ones. I used a liquid fertilizer once a week to feed them, I'll get some miracle grow for next year. Sprayed liquid 7 once a week too. Hope this helps.POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Blessed are those who suffer.
Be careful of what you pray for--you might get it.

Actually I was glad too read that Fay had decided too help you folks out.
Not too be so helpful.

Dang those slow moving tropical fronts that just sit in on spot and rain out--but you folks was in need.
Blessings

Some body is feeding you a line of bull Dale. Tomatoes love the heat and really do their best in it. You just gotta make sure they have enough water when it's hot and dry. If they stopped at 90 no one in the south would ever have tomatoes.

Yea I kind of figured that. That is why I asked. My tomatoes are doing great this year. I have 39 plants and many of them are over 5 feet tall. I never had them grow this big before. Dale

Ditto on the line of bull. 90 degrees is a cool day in the summer here and tomatoes do great unless they get wilt. They are kind of like cotton, the hotter it gets the more they like it as long as they have water.

Greybeard, see if you can herd this hurricane that's coming over this way. We've have had barely over 5 inches of rain this year and sure could stand a little moisture.

I second old and slows motion. we have had more rain here this year than we have in the last 4 years. 7 and a 1/2 inches. last summer there was a new highline going across our pasture. the local electric boys dug the holes 7 foot deep. was powder sand the whole way down. I am not sure that can be recovered from but the moisture we have gotten sure has things greened up. you all have a good day
