I muffed one today!
« on: October 21, 2008, 08:49:33 AM »
I had the perfect set up this morning. I set up in a climber very early in a swampy area that I found yeaterday while scouting. The area was full of every kind of sign that you would want to see. I was quiet getting in and used no light. I was feeling good. I climbed about 20 feet up a Cypress tree and before it was light enough to see my pins, a doe passed me and had no clue that I was there. I was stoked. About the time that it got light enough to see my pins, I heard a twig snap off to my Left. I couldn't see anything as it was pretty thick but a few minutes later I heard another twig snap. I Stand up and get my bow, but I still cant see the deer. About 5 minutes later, I finally see a nice 8 pt taking his time coming my way. He isn't nervious, he is just moving slow. When He got to about 30 yards, I decided that he would do and Decided that when he got behing the next tree, I would draw. Well, I thought that he was behind the tree but I guess he wasn't because about mid draw, he took off sideways! Busted! I guess I jumped the gun so to speak. It is not the first time nor will it be the last but I sure can't wait for Rifle season to open.

It's always disappointing when that happens. One evening about 2-1/2 weeks ago I was hunting out of a ground blind that I made my self along some trails that lead into a bean field and I had a doe walk by. She was behind a tree so I drew back and waited for her to take those final two steps into my shooting lane. Then she saw a forkhorn that was in the field and for some reason turned around and walked away. It would have been a 20 yard chip shot! I let up on my bow and as she was leaving she was about to walk into another shooting lane. This time she saw me draw back and that's when I got busted. She looked at me and snorted and then trotted away.
Score: Deer 1    Tyler 0
I saw her a few days later while in the same blind so I guess I didn't spook her too bad.
Tomorrow I'm gonna be in a tree stand in the same woods I got a 7 pointer with my slug gun last year. I haven't been back there yet this year but I'm having a good feeling. *Fingers Crossed*

The thing we too often forget is that just because the deer's eyes are hidden from view of our eyes doesn't mean all our equipment that we might move is also hidden from the deer. Likely you moved the bow too fast in making your draw and that is the movement it detected. It's an easy mistake to make.

It sure does get the adrenylen flowing. GB, You are right, I rushed it. I was trying to take advantage of the only big tree in the area other than the one that I was in.the rest were very thin. I know where he lives and I am going to give him a few days to forget about me but I will probably go bak Friday to try again.
