Action opening on my BC 45/70
« on: August 31, 2008, 03:05:51 AM »
Hello all,

Finally registered here after a long time lurking on various parts of the forums. I cannot for the life of me figure out a problem I'm having with my BC in 45/70...

After firing a round, the action opens up - I understand that this is a common problem, and I've searched here on the forums for answers.

What really concerns me is that this is happening with LIGHT 405gr Trailboss loads - I'm afraid to shoot anything approaching full power loads in this thing with the problems I'm already having.

I've tried cleaning the action out, making sure the locking block has no oil on it, making certain to close the action forcefully and completely, etc., but no luck so far.

I'd like to avoid sending this back to H&R, and I'm a "do-it-yourself" kind of guy, fairly handy with tools, and have a complete workshop. Is there anything else I can try before giving up and sending it to H&R to have them look at it? I'm hoping to fix it myself before next weekend so that I can bring both this rifle and my 38-55 with me to a group meetup.

Thanks in advance, everyone!  :)

Sounds to me like you need some work on the latch. A quick note, make adjustments to the BARREL ONLY.

Look in the FAQ's and HELP in the stickies. http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=86700

I have had two do this and both where cured with this "fitting" of the latch and shelf.

Be doubly sure to keep the latch clean and dry of oil and debris.

 Good luck,
 CW

Thank you very much, I'm not quite sure how I missed that in my searching.  :D

I'll be filing the engagement surface and checking every few thou to see if I can get this working properly. I had NO IDEA that the opening lever should be "loose" when the action is shut - three out of my eight H&R/NEF single shot guns don't do that.

All three are now A-ok in terms of latch engagement. We'll see how they work at the range later today.

Excellent work, and it wasn't even close to rocket science!  Another reason to love your Handis.  They do their job.
