309 JDJ Load Data
« on: August 17, 2008, 04:16:47 PM »
Hey guys,

I just purchased a 309 JDJ barrel from con10der.  I know SSK has all the load data which I will be receiving but I was wondering if anyone has any pet loads for this caliber.  It is a 14" hunter type barrel.  Any input, favorite load, powder charge, scope for it or any info you want to share about it would be appreciated.  I noticed JD seems to lean towards a 165gr Ballistic tip versus a 150 grain.  How do you feel about that?  It seems to me the 150 gr. bullet would be faster which would be desirable in a pistol load yet have enough weight behind it to smack a deer pretty good.

Thanks,

Bob

I e-mailed SSK and they replied with the load data attached. Also Accurate Arms has data for the .309 JDJ on line. I also copied the data from the SST Rifle Room. I also believe the Hornady Handbook has data for the .309 JDJ.

As SD Handgunner suggested, load date for the 309JDJ is available in many places now days and not just from JD.

As for "pet" loads, they need to be safely worked up in each particular barrel IMO, especially for wildcats, so I for one do not give mine out.    Chambers vary between SSK made and TC factory re-chambered barrels (TC's custom shop does not offer the 309JDJ), and 309-444 barrels from other custom shops.   So pet loads need to be worked up for each barrel.

I wasn't aware that JD favored any bullet weight in particular between 125-180 grains for the 309JDJ other than he does warn against using Barnes X, solid or copper tube type bullets without special loading techniques (ie loads) to keep pressures with them down.    I handles them all well.   So whatever bullet weight/configuration you think is right for your deer hunting situations should be fine, ie ranges shot, deer size, etc, and so needed downrange energy and performance.

The 309JDJ is not an overly hard recoiler, but does need a good scope to stand up to it.   In my case on all of my JDJ handcannons I have always used my large supply of discontinued scope models that stand up to anything... Simmons Gold Medal Match 2-7 and the Tasco Pro Class 1.25-4, 4 and 6 have all been used with great success for many years.    Also used a Burris 2-7 (200293) on one of my 309JDJ's for a few years with no problems.    Now days folks seem to suggest the Bushnell Elite 3200 handgun scopes as strong enough for the 309, but an old Pro Class or Gold Medal is usually cheaper if you can find one and yet still have acceptable glass.   A Pro Class 1.25-4 wore out one of my 375JDJ barrels and was still going strong on a second one when I sold it a couple of years ago.   Glad I acquired a good supply of PC scopes while you could still find them (have several backups on the shelf).

The 309 is a fun barrel for deer hunting until you get your first 375JDJ.    That one is the most fun to shoot of all the JDJ's IMO, and more than enough for anything you want to hunt.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I settled on the 165 Nosler BT driven to about 2400 FPS from my 14" SSK barrel more than 10 years ago. In my gun 150's run only about 75 fps faster.  I have used RE15 for about 10 years, but in the past, JD has recommended the 4350's due to his belief that no other powder gives  a better velocity @ safe pressures. I keep saying that I'm going to do an extensive test with IMR 4350, but I just never seem to get started. Let me say this: A WISE MAN ( OR WOMAN) WILL LISTEN TO JD.
With regard to scopes, I'm using the Bushnell Elite 3200 2-6X on my .309, .338 No.2, one of my .375's, and a .257 JDJ and .30 Merrill as well as some XP's with no problems. I like them a lot. On the .309, I've also used a 4X Leupold, and because I've used the Burris 2-7X on 7-08 and .308 XP's , I'm sure it will work, too. I prefer the Bushnell due to a superior consistency of eye -relief on Contenders. With center grip XP's that's not a problem.
You say " It's a 14" Hunter type barrel". Does that mean it's an SSK rechambered T/C barrel ? If so be certain to work loads up carefully as pressures may be significantly different than an SSK barrel...just a caution.

I bought my 309JDJ about 12 years ago and JD told me to use IRM4350 and a 165 gr bullet for "Everything."
Like Ken stated JD said to use IRM4350. Another source of loading data id Hornday manual. They have the same powders as JD + a couple more.
