Model 15 Front Sight too Short
« on: August 02, 2008, 04:02:33 PM »
Hey guys...shot my new (to me) Monson Model 15 today and I had to hide the front sight under the rear sight in order to hit the target.  I was hitting 7 inches high at 25 yards!!!  I aready have the rear sight bottomed out.  Do they make replacements that are taller?

What weight bullet were you using?  I'm also assuming that you actually have a Model 15-2, not a Model 15.  The Model 15 has a pork chop barrel shroud so they're easy to differentiate.

DW makes two sight blade heights for the Model 15-2.  One is .250" and the other is .300".  If you have the .250" front sight blade and are using ammo with 110 grain bullets then you can expect the point of impact to be pretty high.  Most model 15-2's are regulated for 158 grain bullets using the .300" sight blade and for 125 grain bullets using the .250" sight blade.  Both these sight blades can be found with white, yellow, red, or orange inserts so you can't use the color as an indicator of height.

It's not real common but I have run into Model 15-2's that have a model 14 barrel & shroud on them (and vice versa).  The Model 14-2 uses a fixed rear sight that is lower than the adjustable sights on the Model 15.  It takes a .200" front sight blade.  The Model 14-2's front sights typically have no colored insert.

I once had a Model 14-2 that had a .300" Model 15 front sight blade on it.  It shot about 10" low at 25 yards (just the opposite of your problem).  Once I installed the correct .200" front sight it shot to point of aim.

Check your front sight height.  If it's .300" high then try using some ammo with 158 grain bullets.  Likewise, if you have a .250" front sight then it ought to shoot 2-3 inches high with 158 grainers.  DW still sells front sight blades for the Model 15-2.  They're somewhere around $15 if I recall correctly.

On the other hand, if you actually have a Model 15 with the pork chop shroud then a Model 15-2 front sight can be made to fit, but it does require some modification to work.

Wow...I asked for it and I got it.  That's awesome.

Here's what I have...non-pork chop barrel, with a .200 front sight with yellow insert.

I have been shooting 125 grain .357 mag cartridges.

I have a couple of patridge front sights on my DW's, that are .500 tall. They might still make them. Get ahold of the factory. Think they were around $15.   gypsyman

Lee,

That's some very good information.  Are you a member of the Dan Wesson Forum?  I'm sure the members there would enjoy this information as well.  If you are not do you mind if I post this over there?

Thanks,

Jody

Yes, I am a member of the DW forum and post over there whenever I have anything to contribute.  Feel free to use any of my posts if you think they have any value.

One thing I didn't know was that there was a .500" tall sight blade available in the past.  Last time I talked to Genny at Dan Wesson she told me the only thing they had available was the .250" and .300" sight blades.  Might be worth trying to find out exactly what was offered back in the day.

Same here.  I believe that Millett made them for DW, so if DW doesn't have any, give Millett a call.  I had the same problem with my Norwich, Mass. model 15 (mine was 5 inches high at 15 yards).  the .500 patridge worked well.

Fletcher D did the .250" front sight work out for you??
You may still need a .300" to get your rear sight more centered??
I saw your post about the grips & wanted to ask you about it..
There isn't as much traffic on the DW forum here as there used to be..
Enjoy!!

They were actually still a bit short.  Recently picked up a Pistol Pack and stole one from there:)
Sooo...I have an extra .250 front sight if anybody wants for free.  Thanks again for the favor Gary.  And yes, I picked up a pair of grippers!!!!  I have them on two other .357's (Model 686 6" and Colt King Cobra 6")...will never use a different syn grip again (if I don't have to)

I did...4 heavy barrels (they are actually not vented).  I didn't realize there was a non-vented heavy set available.
I knew there were VR and VH...never seen one with just heavy, though.

Perfect condition minus a bad looking cylinder.  Looks like someone sat it in the pavement.  I have a cylinder that I want to swap, but I just haven't done it yet.

I am looking for another set of these fine Pachmayr grips like I have on this 15 VH6 357 magnum of mine for my new 722 VH 8, I could be talked into wood grips for the right price or trade. I have one Houge grip that will be going down the road.

Check Gunbroker #108380992, Item says for DWL, but details say for 22-357.  Good luck
