Rear sight maxed out to the left on SBH
« on: August 31, 2008, 09:10:18 PM »
I was shooting 325's in my .45, and I had the rear sight almost maxed to the left.  Now I've been experimenting with some 250's, and I'm still shooting an inch to the right even with the dumb thing maxed to the left.

The barrel looks straight to me.  If the front sight is canted to the left, I can't tell.

Anybody have any ideas why it's doing this?

yes i do.  either you are flinching, or your barrel is turning.  if the first,  stop flinching.  if you are sure it isnt you, stop shooting and send it to ruger immediately.   if you dont, one of these shots your ejector and housing is going to fly off of your gun.  i did it to two of mine, dad did it to the third.  although i believe that mine was hitting to the left if i remember correctly.  it has only been about 5 years now.   ???

Send it to Ruger, it sounds like your barrel is turned.

Eliminate it being operator error before sending it to Ruger.   Have another skilled shooter - or two - try it and see what thier results are.  Does it do the same thing with other laods as well?

Thanks for your replies.  I don't think it's operator error because I was shooting 3-4 inch or so groups at 25 yards, and the POI was consistent.  Also, I shot it off of the bench.  Off of the bench it shot an inch to the left of point of aim.  I suppose it is possible that I am doing something wrong consistently enough to make it seem like it's the gun's fault.

I've only tried these two loads through the gun.  I don't have the ability to find someone else to shoot the gun unless there's somebody else who shoots handguns next time I go to the range.

with me, i would adjust the sight, and be back on  target. that would last for about 6 shots.  then it would shift.  for a while i thought i was losing my mind.   then it gave,  i picked up my pieces and sent them in.  the second gun did the same thing 20 rounds later.  if you are confident it aint you, send it in.

Thanks.  Next time I go to the range I'll see if I'm "thumbing it".

Myronman3,

Before your Rugers "let go" was it visually obvious that the barrel had turned?

I was thinking over the "thumbing" issue being the potential reason why it's shooting to the right, but I then realized I don't have that problem with my .22 bisley single six or my Smith 686.  Those sights are pretty much straight on.  Also, I dry-fired a few in my basement, paying careful attention to my grip and technique, and I'm definitely not over-squeezing with my thumb.  So, sounds like I'll be giving Ruger a call.
