re-stocking a sidekick
« on: September 01, 2008, 02:24:00 AM »
Finally found a place that sells walnut 95% stocks for NEF's.  I want to upgrade my wife's for a Christmas present.  My question is will the Huntsman forearm fit the Sidekick?  That is all he sells.  A call to NEF and they said yes.  A comparison post on this forum said they have different hole patterns.  Anyone know absolutely beofore I shell out the bucks?  Thanks in advance.  BTW, this gun is a shooter, and I managed to squeeze out a one ragged hole 3 shot group at 75 once.  7/8 to 1" at one hundred are common!

No, the Huntsman forend will not fit the Sidekick without some modifications. It would need a new hole, and it would have to be opened up in the rear of the barrel channel to accomodate the swell near the receiver. The Sidekick has a shorter receiver, so there is more material removed from the forend since the barrel profile is still the same as the Huntsman. I think there are pics in the FAQ's that if you study close, you will know what you are up against.

Do you mind disclosing the place that is selling the walnut stocks? If these are 95%, can you explain the other 5%? Finish? Recoil Pads? Hardware?

Yes, these NEF's can be shooters, I have shot several MOA groups with mine.

Huntsman is on top, Sidekick on bottom of pics. You might be able to see what I mean from my pics.

Busta, 95% means that you have to do final metal/wood fit.  He states on his site that the barrel channels are slightly undesized and somewhere else I saw that butt stock is approx. 1/8' oversize.
Her is the link to this site:    http://www.gunstocksinc.com/web_pages/Plate-pics/NEF-stocks/Handi-rifle-stocks.htm
I spoke to him on the phone Thursday and he told me he could turn around a cherry stock in about 2 weeks, has some plain walnuts in stock, 2 weeks if he has to make them.  Also, shorter LOP was no extra cost.  I can't vouch for his integrity, but if he can make a Sidekick forestock, I will let you know in a few weeks.  Hope this helps and thanks for the info!  I specifically asked NEF if the forearms were interchangable and they said yes and it appears I spoke to an unknowledgable talking head!  Thanks again!

GSI is a GBO sponsor that makes very nice stocks, there are pics of their work on H&Rs in the FAQs topic "Let's see some Handis". ;)

I have a few sets of GSI stocks and like them very much but I don't know that I would call them 95% finished... does not take much to final fit them but if you want them real nice you need to sand them and seal them quite a bit. Just depends on what ya want when you are done. They have a very large selection to choose from just depends on what ya want to spend. The only people that have as many or more is the factory . Kurt

This is directed to Busta.  Did you use the h&r scope rail and low or medium rings to mount your scope and what is the scope.  Thanks for your help

Per an e-mail reply on Tuesday, he does not make a sidekick foregrip.  Starting all over on the hunt...

Did you ask them if they could give you a forend with out the hole drilled? They will do it for contender forends. Then you could just drill your own hole.

Any thoughts on the different barrel contour?  I know the channel is undersized.  I'm pretty sure he would do it with out the hole drilled and the ram rod hole cut, but unsure of the different barrel contours.  Would really love to see this shooter with a nice cherry stock.  I have an M-1 Carbine (Underwood) with one and it is a cut above the rest!

I believe the barrel contours are the same just the lenght of the forearm is longer as the frame is shorter on the sidekick. kurt
