Tight case necks and large shoulders
« on: September 08, 2008, 08:06:36 AM »
So it turns out when you take a big case, and put a small neck on there, the shoulder becomes a little larger than it might should be.  Case in point, the 7mm RUM.

Thought it was a fluke at first, but then it happened again....  So I took all the cases that I had just chamfered and chamfered the living @#$^ out of them, no more problems.

Telescoped necks are a pain.  Another thing to do to reduce their occurrence is to polish the inside of the case necks with a brass brush in an electric drill.  That and camfering helps a lot.

Not quite what Akley had in mind , me thinks   ;D

Give the brush in the neck a try , it will do wonders , some powdered graphite in the neck will help too .

One of the reasons I went to using OneShot. Lube stays in the neck and assists with seating.

Reckon a man could reform those cases by firing them?

 JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!!

Pull the bullets, dump the powder and toss them cases!

Something you may try is to get a slim profile chamfer tool , I think it has a 15* cut as apposed to the 30* of most cutters , it was designed to help seating of for the longer VFD bullets .

I beleave it is Lyman that makes it but don't Quote me on that .

That is actually exactly what I did.  At first I had used my RCBS, which has the 30 degree or so angle, then I switched to my other chamfer tool, which has much less of a slope.  Did the trick.  I would rather not throw anything that resembles lubrication in these case necks...  maybe in something without quite so much recoil.

You can dip the cases into mica also helps. I use # 12 shot with mica in it for neck sizeing, it will not contaminate the powder.
