« on: October 21, 2008, 11:52:03 PM »
Hello everyone, I have just started loading for this cartridge and would like to hear what powders and bullets have worked best for you.

Thanks!

300 grain hard cast over H4198, CCI primer in Remington cases for a Marlin 444P.  I won't even bother trying anything else any longer.

Slufoot: it almost totally depends on the particular rifle you have and its twist.  If you have a marlin with the micro-groove barrel you will want to lap the bore, ala Veral Smith, to get cast, gas-checked bullets to shoot accurately.  I have lapped the bores on a couple of 444s, as Veral recommends, to .432", load them with 300 gn or 330 gn cast gas checked bullets from Beartooth Bullets (I would call the owner a desciple of Veral) over Varget or H322 for groups of an inch or less at 100yds.

I use H4198 when shooting jacketed 240s.  Hodgedons powder gives loading data on the powder cannister labels for their powders and their formula for the 444 and 240 gn slug is way more accurate than any factory load I have thrown down the tube.

Now, since you are loading the 444, hie yourself on over to the Beartooth Bullet website and read the owner's treatise on the 444 and review his load data.  As mentioned earlier, he is a desciple of Veral Smith and his accuracy results with the 444 are incredible.  HTH.  Mikey.

My 444 was with the micro grove barrel. I wish I could tell you how much powder I used but the book the load was in is no longer mine. It was a full load IMR 4198 with the Hdy 265 gr FN and it did excellent in all application for that cartridge.

45-70:  My Hornady Handbook lists 45.3 grains of 4198 as the max load for their 265 gn bullet in the 444, pushing it to 2200'/sec.  HTH.  Mikey.

Same here, I have two of them and the Hornady 265 and IMR4198 is a tough combo to beat.

My Marlin loves IMR 4198 and 240 and 265gr Speer soft points.

Thanks for the info folks, seems like H or IMR 4198 is the favorite of most shooters.

My H&R .444 w/1:20" twist shoots real good w/H4198 and the 240gr XTP and 265gr Hornady, and RL7 under the 355gr WLN DCG Beartooth, all under 1", 3-shot 100yd groups.  ;)

H4198 and Hornady 300gr XTP
Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

IMR4198 and a 240 gr flat point in my micro groove .444s shoots one ragged hole at 50 yrds and 1.5 inch at 100 have killed 7 black bears with the 240 all 1 shot 1 kill at from 25yrds to over 60 load is just under max ,however its too much for deer so i use a 180 gr and load it light  shoots the same as the 240s with out the kick or ruined meat
