Value of a Lady Smith 38spl.
« on: October 21, 2008, 09:21:18 AM »
I have an elderly aunt that has a blued Lady Smith that she has offered to give me. I doubt the gun has had a box of rounds through it although it had a couple small surface rust spots. I feel kind of bad just taking it and am thinking about offering her something for it. I do not really need it or want it but then I like guns in general. What my be a fair amount to offer her on the lower end? My local gun shop suggested around $300.

also it depends on what its worth to her and if the gunsmith recommended 300 go with it if she will take it and it makes you feel better i recomend getting a second opinion from another gunsmith or dealer it would help to have a picture or possibly the gun in hand. Wish i could be more help just telling you what i would try.

Thanks for the input so far. It would be awhile before I could post a picture if at all. If this helps it is blued with the 2" barrel, and walnut grips. As stated earlier it had two very small rust spots on the frame which basically wiped off. Otherwise the gun is in new condition, barrel, timing, etc. appears perfect. She also has the box for it. My guess is that it was bought in the 80s. I fired six rounds through it and then cleaned it for her. Trigger pull and action were nice and smooth. At her age she cannot handle the recoil even with wadcutters. I will probably get it free from her anyway but this side of my family like to kind of play the game of even though it is offered free they expect an offer but would probably be insulted if I kept insisting they take the money. She certainly does not need the money as she is quite wealthy. (She is kind of doing the same thing with me with her late model Lincoln Town Car when she feels she can no longer drive it.) I really, really do not want a big Lincoln!

well like i said offer the money do not insist just offer with a smile if she turns you down twice then say ok and kindly say thanks, as for the lincoln i cant help you there it is hard to take it and hard not to lol but do whatever feels right! as for the age and condition id say its worth a little over what was origanally paid for it thats if she bought it from a dealer. Remember if she expects payment like you said you think she will but turns it down welp you offered right think about it.

If she is giving it away I would take the Town Car.  Is she interested in adopting me?

Well guys I know it is tough but I would probably have to drive the Lincoln until she passes on to keep the peace. Seriously, she has always been kind of a close aunt. She lost her husband a few years ago and does not have any children. She is the youngest of 10 children and has seen most of her siblings pass on or in various stages of dementia or other serious health problems including my mother who is 94. I think that it is really starting to get to her and she is trying to decide how she is going to deal with her assets while she is still functioning fairly well. Sometime in the future if you see a 50ish year old male driving a dark blue Lincoln with a Lady Smith on the dash it is probably me.

I've wanted a Lincoln Town Car ever since I had my first part time job. Way back then I said to myself that if I ever got to where I was making $100 a week I was gonna buy me one. By the time I got there I was no closer to being able to afford it than when I was working part time at $1.25 an hour. I still can't afford one. I'd still love to own one.
