Jewelweed.  Break the stems open at the 'knobs' and rub it on the rash.

Not actually natural, but I have used clorox as long as I can remember.

Wipe yourself off with rubbing alcohol on a paper towel.Guaranteed!! I keep a bottle in my truck at all times.Do it as soon as you think you've been exposed.

An absolutely sure cure if you get up in the morning and find you have posion ivey is Zanfel. You can buy it at wal mart or any other drug store. It is a cream and a little expensive (about $35.00) for a small tube but, goes a long way. You rub a little of it on the area for about 15 seconds, rinse it off, and the itch is immediately gone with the rash gone within a few hours. Heard about it when it came out a couple years ago from Paul Harvey.

Never tried Zanfel, and at that price it's unlikely I will do so, but that's good to know.

My usual "treatment" is to scrub the skin with a good soap as soon as possible after contact.  If I can get that done inside maybe 2 or 3 minutes I can beat it.   Otherwise, it's ALL MOST all natural; I just wait about two weeks for it to to go away and use Walmart's Calamine lotion to counter the itch a little.

I understand you reluctance in the price, but I am not talking about a treatment of posion ivy, such as calimine lotiona and a two week ordeal of poison ivy. I am talking about a 15 second treatment of the poison ivy AFTER it has manifested itself. The itching is gone, RIGHT AWAY, and the poison ivy is GONE next day.
I will pay 35 bucks for that kind of relief.

my wife has an aloe plant. break one of the stems and smear the aloe juice on the poison ivy-it works.
I also take a glass of scotch; won't help poison ivy but the itching does seem to lessen after every shot.

The most important thing to note with PI is that it can usually be avoided.  When you get home take your clothes off and put them in the washing machine, then walk up stairs and take a shower.  Regularly I crawl through stands of poison ivy during turkey season and the only time I ever get a rash is when I don't take a shower until more than 12 hours later.

I have tried them all except the Zanfel, which I may try on the kids if they get it, but have found that the Jewelweed is as good or better than calimine. Clorox works but stings like heck. Hydrocortisone works to stop the itching. I even had to get Prednisone steroids for it one time. I believe that the best way to get rid of it is to swim in a pool. The regular chlorine of the pool water will content will get rid of it in a few days.

Never heard of zanfel but I plan on getting some. Sounds like a sure thing for a back pack.  Thanks Dee for the info.

I'm tellin you guys! Paul Harvey don't put out no crap. ;D  Seriously, this stuff performs just like I said. Itching stops "RIGHT NOW" and the rash is gone next morning. Don't by the generic stuff, its just soso.

Never done this my self but my uncle eats a leaf of the poison ivy every year and he never gets it. He was told to do this by an old lady when he was a kid and had a bad go of poison ivy. He is in his 80's now.

I have read articles where if you eat one leaf a day for something like a week you will permanently immunize yourself.

I tried jewelweed and it caused a rash.  My mother-in-law used to make a tea out of a plant she called seneca.  There were two varieties and she used the one with a hairy stem.  She said the other was poison.  The tea was some of the roughest stuff I ever drank and we are in a big moonshining area.  I'll look for Zanfel the next time I am in Wally World.

I've tried most of the items listed,  including Zanfel and predizone.  The best cure (I do mean cure) for me is a jewel weed based soap sold by Walgreen.  You get 3 small hotel shaped bars for about nine bucks.   Nothing works better for me,  but I suppose everyone is different.

I'd try jewelweed from the wild,  but I'm not sure if I could ID it.

Marsh muck! The black smelly kind you find around cattail marsh. Rub it on and let dry, repeat if it wears off before end of day.

Ditto. This stuff works miracles for me too. Now, everyone's body chemistry is different so results are not guaranteed. ;)

Dee:  I followed your suggestion last year regarding teh Zanfel and it worked very well for my wife who has a real allergy to PI.  Thanks for the recommendation.  We also tried Burts Bees Poison Ivy Soap and that seemed to help quite a bit as well.

I picked some of the 'poison' up earlier this summer and used the Zanfel and the soap, along with copious amounts of Caladryl and the like and it seemed to help.  I noticed the 'itch' starting to go away almost immediately.

Something I also tried (first time) that some folk do not recommend is to open the blister gently to let the fluid escape and soak it up immediatley with a kleenex, then wash with the Zanfel and add a bit of Caladry and the stuff starts going away a lot quicker.

I live in the woods, so to speak, and there is lots of the PI around - I make sure I keep it cut low/down with the lawnmower and my wife sprays it with a specific PI killer (nothing else seems to work) and then we can avoid it.

I got one heck of a case of the stuff last year when cutting trees - seems some of the 'vines' I was pulling off the trees were PI vines.

Then I follow 1Marty's advice and the Scotch seems to really help.................. Mikey.

It looks kind of like pigweed to me but spreads out more and lighter in color, lobed leaves, and orange or yellow flowers later in the summer, and grows in low places and woods edge. Usually, you will find it growing around poison oak. I have never had poison oak; I guess some folks don't get it. My dad never had it and he was a logger and farmer; I used to help him some- grew up in the woods. Jewel weed is good for stings and anything that itches.

Take a COLD shower, after you are exposed. That way your pours in your skin won't expand and let the oils in (like a warm or hot shower will). If you get the rash, pure O2 (from an O2 bottle) helps to dry the rash out.
Have lights? Thank a Lineman!
