Interesting info on a bolt action 500 sw
« on: September 05, 2008, 02:24:17 PM »
I was at the gun store today and was playing with a few loose shells on the counter.  I noticed a 500SW and a 243 winchester super short magnum.  They are close VERY close so I tried one in a 243WSSM.  The 500sw fit the box mag perfect and the bolt picked it right up and ejected it like it was made for the round.

I have been on a suppressor kick the last year  ;D Im wanting one more. I think a rebarreled winchester ssm in 500sw with a can on the end shooting a 240 grain bullet would be both VERY quiet and deadly out to 75to 80  yards  for hogs.

Anyone thought of ever building a 500sw bolt gun?

Sounds like a good way to turn a WSSM chambered rifle into something useful.

If your wanting a sub-sonic stopper the 500 would be great. You can get up to 700 gr. bullet for. I have some, but have not loaded any yet. At 800 fps. you would have a Taylor Knock down of 40. That`s not bad considering a .300 Win. mag. loaded to the max. with a 240 gr. bullet only has a TKD of 24.64.

sorry I have not got back  with you. I have been pulling 3 phase wire for our  new paintboth the last few nights.

We loaded up a 243wssm and it worked out great. I just need the od dia. of a H&R 500sw barrel.

couple of guys on here said they would hook me up on that hopefully soon. I found a winchester  coming out of the pawn friday  for 400 dollars it looks new and I want to snatch it up if  the H&R barrel will  work.

I think this will be my next suppressed project.  If it works out Ill probally cut the barrel back to 10" and weld the can on to get me back to somewhere around 18" so it will not be a sbr. . My wife said no more tax stamps until I get some stuff paid off. ;)

I have a 9mm can  that I can have the baffles punched out. you cant have extra baffles laying around. Unless you want to spend some time in club fed.
