barnes all copper bullets
« on: September 10, 2008, 12:19:31 PM »
1st post. Is it ok to substitute a 140 grain Barnes all copper bullet in place of a 140 grain jacketed bullet in my reloading manual ? Will the powder charges remain the same? This is in loads for the 357 Max.
                                                                                            Thanks JWIN

Jwin,

In a word, NO!! Contact Barnes and they can give you a load that will work.

Greg is absolutely right.
Do not substitute a BARNES bullet for any other.
The solid copper bullets will have higher pressures than with the same load in a conventional bullet.

They nailed it --DO NOT -- sub a Barnes for any other bullet using the same data , the solid copper bullet will cause a drastic pressure diffrence and in some cases to the point of gun failure .

If loads are approaching maximum it is prudent to back off a grain or two before trying ANY new bullet.  Also, a cartridge with a smaller case will be more sensitive to minor changes in a reloading recipe.  All that said, I've used Hornady, Nosler, Barnes TSX and Barnes Banded Solids in the 165 to 168 grain versions in a 30/06 with the same powder charge in all and the pressure was not drastically different between the different bullets.  The Barnes bullets may be harder but the grooves reduce friction.
