Need some advice from Wildcat loaders
« on: September 14, 2008, 11:12:06 AM »
As some of you know I shoot a 41GNR , which is a Gary Reeder designed pistol round , all the load data that I have been able to get is for full power loads using jacketed bullets or top end-heavy G/C cast . I would like to work up some lower end gen. plunking loads using cast bullets in the 1000 fps range , Full power loads run in the 1800 to 2200 fps range .

The 41GNR is a 44 mag necked down to .41 cal. for those who don't know , the problen is I am not sure were to start on this one as far as powder & charge weight . I have considered going with the lower end 41 Mag loads that use cast but am not real sure .

Any advice besides DON'T DO IT .  ;D

2400 is a versatile powder in the right burn range also. It works well with reduced loads. Were it me I'd look at loads for the .41 and .44 Mags with similar bullet weights and pick a load in between and start there.

Bill

I had completely forgot about 2400 as a powder choice , that may work well for what I want . I have even thought about sending the gun to S&W's custom shop and having a 2nd Cylinder installed in 41 Mag , sort of like the Ruger Single Six .

The Unique was on the short list of powders along with Trail Boss , Titegroup & Bullseye .

I'm not sure S&W will fit that extra cylinder for you. Make darn sure you call and get their agreement to do so in advance and DO NOT send your current cylinder to them or it will NOT be returned I'd bet the farm on that really. I suspect that if they know you have that wildcat cylinder in it they will not touch it with a ten foot pole.
