Gators smaller checks may have an advantage, but I doubt if it would show in performance. Sizing will be slightly easier with the smaller ones. The 416 size will work great on bullet diameters down to .400, if I cut the 10MM mold (LBT).
While we are on the subject of 41 cal gas checks. -- OLD STYLE Lyman checks, which are much thinner stock than Hornady or Gator uses, were the only thing available until recently. So there are many thousands of 41 and 416 molds out there which have check shanks that are too large for the new thicker checks. They will work fine with 44 caliber checks, my friends! Take them back out of mothballs and use them. Current Lyman and RCBS checks are all manufactured by Hornady, to Hornady specks. It is possible to find the old Lyman checks on dealer shelves though. If there is any question when you purchase checks open the box and if they are yellow they are the old Lyman, which won't fit modern molds. (I cut molds for the old Lyman checks for about 20 years, but switched to a smaller check shank when Hornady started makeing thicker checks.)
