My Dad bought a 45 caliber Huntsman back in the 1970s. For lack of a better description, it looks like an old cavalry rifle (straight grip stock, case colored receiver, banded forearm, 28” barrel, etc.). It has since passed from my father to my brother to me without a manual. I am brand new to muzzleloading and have the following questions:
1. What is max powder load and does it change with bullet weight? I hope to use 777 powder to minimize corrosion. Is there a website that has recommended loads for muzzleloading? How do you know when you are at maximum? Also, any bullet recommendations are welcome.
2. The original ramrod has been lost. Where can I find a replacement? As I recall, this ramrod, like the newer ones, contracted for storage under the barrel.
3. Does anyone make a conversion nipple to change over to 209 primers? The breech plug seems to be a press / slip fit as there is no apparent means to engage a wrench of any type. It does have a threaded nipple.
4. Any “no-no’s” that you just don’t do with these old guns?
I would love to get this old girl back into the field, but don’t know where to start. Because of my lack of experience, I’m afraid to make a mistake – especially the kind that makes the gun explode in your hands. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
