1881 marlin mag spring

Does anyone have a trick for installing a tube mag spring. It tends to kink when halfway in. Possibly a dowel would help guide it.

I use a 1/4 or 3/16 dowel.  Insert in the spring and shove the spring into place.  Hold the spring in place with the left while removing the dowel and inserting the plag and screws..
