Lil gun and cast bullets
« on: September 12, 2008, 03:22:38 AM »
Newby question.
I am getting ready to start loading for my .32H&R mag, and notice that Hodgdon lists Lil'gun loadings for various jacketed bullets, but not for cast/lead bullets.  I've noticed the same in .41mag, where 110 and 296 are also not listed for lead bullets, until you get to 245 gn lswc (but still not Lil gun).  The 250+ gn gc's will take lil gun, 110 and 296.
Why is this?
Should I start with another powder for these calibers, such as Titegroup or Trailboss?  I'd like to start with a cast bullet load to make my practice more affordable, and already bought some (100 gn 32s and 215 gn 41s).
Thanks.
Don

Unique is my goto powder for most cast bullet loads. 2400 for hotter stuff. Accurate #5 is good too, its just hard to find these days.

I 2nd Unique for cast , I don't think that there is a better powder for lead bullets in either a rifle or handgun . Some say its to dirty but it works so well I can live with cleaning the guns a tad more often .  ;D

I have actually done a lot of loading with Lil' Gun and cast bullets in my .357 MAX.
I started doing a lot of playing around with going to a much larger charge of a
slow burning powder rather than a small charge of fast burning powder in my cast loads.
I loaded a .357 MAX load of H4895 and a 205 grain cast bullet that was so accurate
I had trouble believing it. Also a LOT less muzzle flash, noise and recoil.
Read some of Mr. Lee's (Of Lee Reloader and Lee Bullet Die fame) thoughts on the subject of pressure
curves/peak pressure versus the plastic and elastic limits of leaded bullet alloys.

im not a fan of lilgun. I do keep it around for two things. the 32mag and 3220 with 120 grain bullets. Ive found nothing better for these. you can use jacketed data.

I like Unique for my cast bullet loads too. I do not think the H110 and W296 is listed with cast bullets because they need to fill the case to maintain their predicted burn rates. If you do not put enough in, then you may get a dangerous over pressure, so basically you can not load them down for cast bullets. Since you have to stuff the case full, the cast bullets would be getting gas cut real bad leaving lots of lead in the bore. I have been trying Lil Gun in the 22 Hornet and 221 Fireball, so far it has not impressed me. I can not speak about the revolver cartridges yet, I have not tried them.

I don't use the slow spherical powders with cast bullets myself.  I have found a great use for Lil'Gun though - it gives much better accuracy in my 10" .30 Herrett than H110, IMR4227, 2400, etc. and it does it at a satisfying high velocity.

Thanks for the advice, guys.  It sounds like I'm okay with the .32 (Lloyd), but probably want to pick up some other powders to also experiment with, such as Unique.
Keep it coming.
