Let's seethose rimfire "beaters"...
« on: July 26, 2007, 12:06:34 PM »
Well; that is hardly an apt description...a real gun owner doesn't have a "beater"..that is a gun he intentionally beats up..

.. But many of us have a "country" type rifle that is likely to be left behind the truck seat for a time..compact, handy and not fancy wood or costly glass !

I have about three .22LR rifles that I use like that..one is an NEF and this is another..the one probably most often found behind my truck seat:

It is an old Anschutz "woodchucker" that I have lengthened the stock by 1.75"..and the 16.25" barrel gives it 35" overall . it has a 5 shot clip and shoots well (of course).
I am working to improve the sights though.my "over 70" eyes really need a scope..but I can make do with the irons for short range and am designing (in my head) a peep sight system..

    I added a non-slip butt pad I made from an old flip-flop..

Now, show us your beater..or would "country" rifle sound better ?

If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

How about that old Stevens Model 15-A on the top?
Single feed bolt action with manual cocking, no butt plate, Creepy trigger, But has fine sights and thicker than normal rifling cut in the barrel. This one shoots very well and is the one that your Father or Grandfather would give to you with a couple bullets and the terse warning that you had better brang back a couple Squirrels/Rabbits or a couple shells!

The Rem Nylon 66 below the Stevens is much newer with this one being a 1971 vintage. It is a great beater as it can take a lot of abuse and is still fun & accurate to shoot. The economy during this era allowed for lots of shooting. You would get your game limit most of the time but with the rapid-fire capabilities of this semi-auto, it made you a somewhat sloppy shooter as compared to the one who had to use the old Stevens.

I know that this is the rim fire rifle forum but I just couldn’t resist throwing that old 1975 vintage H&R Model 649 in the picture as I feel that it has earned that right. It is the one that is scratched up with shiny places in the bluing but accompanies you everywhere from Mushroom hunting to Bird hunting to the trap line or even coon hunting. It will appear in your hand almost of its own accord and will not let you down when all else fails.

We all have our beaters and they sure do bring back some fond memories. Strange how a piece of wood & metal almost seems to develop its own personality, I think that in the end I will give up my guns when they pry my cold, dead, fingers from around them (as the saying goes).

Now...about my new beaters... ;)

  Glanceblam;

A good friend of mine in high school had a Stevens just like that. it had a black painted forend tip and an old Mosssberg scope..about 3/4" x 15"...but it was a good shooter..

  Lone..
Those Ithacas were pretty nice..accurate too ! I believe they were made by Erma in Germany..

That model 15-A did indeed have a black painted forearm tip on it but it got sanded off during refinishing ::)
I believe that this gun cost $15.00 when it was new.

Just a few I have picked up over the years. Some are even beaters my dad had and handed down to me. It is funny what was a beater 20 or 30 years ago is worth something today.

Here is my latest beater 22, a Remington 580, used to be a Boy Scout rifle.

Took it to the range yesterday, it shoots ok, about average for a field grade 22, may see about replacing the barrel.

Don't forget the yellow plastic flashlight, duck-taped under the barrel.

Hose clamps if you want to add some 'bling' to the package ;)

  Torpedo..
I carry a NEF .22 LR in my truck..could as easily put my mag barrel on..but the LR has "peeps", while the mag has a scope..

Truck ride not so tough on the peeps.

Nice thing about the NEF, you can assemble/disassemble it with a dime, and store it under the seat
or in a small olock box. I even carry one (broke down & covered) in the rear rack of my mountain bike..

Huntersmurf;
Never had one of those Rems, but I would like to try one..too bad Rem dropped that one, they still need a good bolt action .22 LR,Mag & .17.

I have several of the 500 series Rem. 22's...  They are an excelent 22 and i would hate to consider mine "beaters"...

I do have a Rem. 552 that's been in the barn for many years, it looks like heck with the finish all cracked on the stock...  It's never been cleaned and never fails to work perfectly...

I also have an old Savage 3D single shot that's been our trapping gun for many many years, my dad bought it for $10.00 and i got it from him.  I finally brought it in about a year ago and cleaned it up.  99.9% of the ammo that goes through it, is CCI CB shorts or longs.

I bought a Rem. 597M (22 Win mag. semi auto) to use as a beater several years ago, and it's been excelent.  It also has never failed to fire or work perfectly, and it shoots very good.  I bought the synthetic stock model, as like i said...it was to be a "beater".  I've killed quite a few woodchucks with it, along with numerous other pest here, around the farm.

Mine is a Remington model 34 that I gave $14 for in 68 or 69. I refinished the stock in my 8th grade shop class (back when they would let you do that sort of thing) and later had to glue a crack in neck of the stock when it started to split. It is still the most accurate .22 I have ever owned generally shooting 1/2" or less at 50 yards with most common ammos. Only my Marlin 39 with scope and match grade ammo will come close.

This is my 60 year old $50 beater.

'Beater' conjures up images of thrashing around in the undergrowth, trying to flush the tiger, (or the pheasant, if you're not into dangerous game !)

A Remington 511 ,  5clip b/a. A bit beat up. Maybe one day I'll give it a good polish up with some fine steel wool, and sand and oil the stock up good. Make it look 'purty'.

It shoots good too.

Magazine feeds fine. The barrel is not free floating. It has a bit of a pressure point up front. I've left it that way.

I had to tighten the bolt handle with a good hammer blow from a punch, recently, as it was wobbly.

The trigger weight of pull is around a ton, but you just have to grit your teeth and follow through.

The iron sights are pretty rudimentary, and hard work for tired old eyes, but they do work.

Here's a pic of the 'old girl',

and a target that I shot with CCI Standard, 5 shots at 25mtrs while setting the sights with a six o'clock hold on the bottom of the bold red 8 ring.

cheers

My is Remington model 33 that my dad gave me back about 50 year ago. With five shells and a warning about using all the ammo.Still got it but fixed the broken stock which was held on with wire and black tape. I am still proud of that rifle just the same as that first day fifty year ago .

Stevens 84C.  Picked it up CHEAP CHEAP (IIRC 15$) as the stock was trashed and cracked/split. I stripped down and pined and epoxied the stock and then clear coated it with poly. Its yellowed allot since... 20+ years ago.

I had peeps on it and switcher back to open sites. It shoots GREAT and the extra long barrel makes for some mighty quiet CB long shooting in the garden!!! You could probably fill a PU bed twice with all the chucks, skunks, feral cats and raccoons this thing has harvested thru the years. In fact, I have a "job" with it tomorrow night.  ::) A friend has raccoons in his attic and they are about to get evicted!!!  ::) :o ;D

Thru the years, I have had many rifles come and go. I even have a couple custom "Grand" rifles, but this is one I will never let go. I am going to take to the grave.. I LOVE IT!!!
