Lapping the scope rings

I've already put my scopes on my rifles and soon to go to the the range. Then a friend of mine at work, told me about some gizmo that you want to use to make sure once you sight in your scope, it stays that way. He told me it runs about $40. Now, I've got to take them off and get this thing so I can forget sighting-in my scope every season. What it does is lightly grinds I suppose, so more of your scope actually touches the inside of your rings. Have any of you heard of this?

Sorry but that's a fix for a non existant problem. The simple fact is that rings just don't line up properly at least most don't. Lapping prevents the damage to your scope from misaligned rings and ensures adequate contact to hold the scope in place as well. Fixing half the problem is to me a non starter.

Or you can just use Burris Signature rings with the plastic inserts it cures both problems without the lapping. I use either Signature rings or I lap all rings I use other than the Burris Signature. So my answer is yes get a lapping bar and lapping compound and use it or buy Burris Signature rings.

I purchased a Lapping bar from Sinclair Int several years before Burris introduced the Signature rings.
I lap every set of rings that I install unless they are the Burris (which I find myself buying more often). When lapping the rings you can see how well the rings are aligned, it is amazing how far off rings can be, then again I have found SOME of the Ruger factory rings are very good!
Unless you like to put ring marks or dents in your new scopes buy a lapping rod or the Burris Signature rings!

Well I agree about the signature zee rings, I have 3 or 4 sets and you don't have to worry about damage to your scopes. About my post before, I assumed snuffer wanted a way to to keep a scope from slipping under recoil, a hard kicker can cause this with a dozen or so shots. Admittedly lapping is where you should start but if you don't have a lapping rod, the liqiud tape idea will keep'em from slipping.

I'm a Sig Zee user too, at last count I had over 30 scopes mounted in them, any other rings that I use get lapped. I use a Russ Hayden lapping kit, $23 plus shipping makes it one of the best buys I've ever made.

I will probably get the scotchcote and a lapping bar, yes both! A lapping bar might not get used that often, but on the other hand can I get the burris rings seperate from having to get the scope also? Plus it's quite away from gun season, so if I start early enough I can have things ready. I'll have to check to make sure that all my scopes are 1". Wow, now to redo everything.  A 45-70, 308, 2 270's, 30-30, and a 223. But it beats the heck out of having to make sure that everything is on. Except, when I change a bullet weight or powder or something. I'll use the scotchcote on a couple and probably use the bar and compound on the rest. I appreciate the info, heck I'm 55 and I'm still learning. Do they sell burris rings seperate though?

Yup, just like any other ring, Signtures are available in different mount types too, Signature "Zee" are Weaver style.

Snuffer if you already have the scopes already mounted and sighted in and no problems, I wouldn't touch'em. The 45-70 is the only one I'd worry about because of the recoil. The 308 and 270 in a truely light rifle, maybe. Just my opinion. Dave
