Nikon, Burris, Weaver handgun scopes
« on: July 28, 2008, 03:46:34 AM »
Any opinions or experiences with Nikon, Simmons, Burris, and Weaver handgun scopes?  Any other name brands that I've missed?

I'm (more or less) new to the Encore pistol and have a .308 barrel with a Leupold 2x scope that I bought used.  I would like some more magnification by mounting a variable power scope.  I've looked at the Leupol VX's.  I know the Leupold is a great scope, and I'm a Leupold fan, but MAN are those things pricey!  They're $150 - $200 or so higher than all the others!

I'd recommend you get a Bushnell Trophy 2-6. It seems to be optically and mechanically the equal of the Elite 3200 2-6 but without the Rain Guard coating and costs a bunch less. They are what I chose these days.

I'm a Burris fan. I have never had a problem with any of them on guns including .308, .454 or .45-70. They are strong, high quality scopes at a reasonable price.

Nikon has a quick focus eyepiece, so you can quickly find the optimum relief at any magnification.
The Nikon Monarch EER is very clear also, as good as Leupold.

My Bushnell Trophy tends to have more distortion near the edges and very sensitive to eye position relative to the ocular.

Bushnell also has a fixed eye relief, 2X- 6X have the same relief.

The Nikon eye relief will vary with magnification but you can correct it with the fast focus eyepiece.  This optical design seems to be more relaxed to head position.

FWIW, I have 3 Nikons and 1 Bushnell Trophy...The Nikons are on my .223, .357 Mag, and .44 Mag,  Bushnell on the 17 HMR.

I have 2--2-6 bushnell trophys 629 and super blackhawk hunter
1 2x bushnell trophy on charger
1 2x nikon on mk2 gov
1 4x tasco pro class on super 14 .223
Had a 4x redfield and 4x burris on a 647
OF the ones I own or have owned I prefer 2-6 trophy
However the burris 2-7 by buddy had on a 629 blew everything else away!!

I am currently using 2 - 3x12x Burris LER Handgun Scopes (one on a Super 14  .22 LR Match Contender and the other on a Super 14 .223 Remington Contender) and have a 2.5x8x Weaver Handgun Scope on a Super 14 7-30 Waters. I really don't have any complaints with any of these.

I have had a few different 2x6x32mm Bushnell Trophy's over the past many years and have never liked them. Their field of view has always seemed small than what is cataloged and to me looking through a 2x6x Bushnell Trophy is like looking through a tunnel. I have also used an older 2x6x32mm Elite 3000, and it was about the same as the 2x6x32mm Trophys in my opinion.

Ive had good luck with several burris and weaver scopes on my large bore handguns, I also use a bushnell on a 22lr that has been trouble free.

I decided to go with the Nikon. I ordered the 2.5x8 Monarch based on the advice you guys gave me. I really liked the length of eye relief that is specified, and the quick focus eyepiece. Hope I like it as much when I actually get my hands on it!

Thanks for all the help, I'll post my experience on here when I get it in and mounted on the Encore!

I like Burris for $100 less than the Leupold, only own Nikon binoculars.  About all I can say is "see avatar"!

After shopping through the handgun scope pages myself, I'm going to go back to Burris simply because Leupold is that high.

I got my Nikon Monarch (2.5 - 8x) pistol scope yesterday.  So far so good!  It's surprisingly light weight.  It's very clear, and I can dial it up to 6x and still get a very good eye relief (I'm still at arms length at 6x).  When I get up to 7 and 8x, however, it begins to tunnel a bit, forcing me to lean towards the scope to get a good clear view.  Seems like an excellent scope so far!

The fast focus eyepiece is suppose to correct the tunnelling observed at high magnification.  A few quick turns should get you back where you want.

WOW!  I got the Encore out and tried that quick focus ring, and it really is effective!  I sorta thought that was an adjustment like other scopes have, you know that focuses to your eyes.  That thing really has a lot of adjustment!  At low power, I can focus it until it's like looking at a TV screen!  I'm really impressed with this scope! ;D ;D

The scope has been discontinued by Nikon.
They have a new one out with a new reticle, the BDC (Ballistic Drop Coefficient).
Supposedly it estimates the drop of a bullet for you.
I prefer the regular reticle, and use your own experience for the kentucky windage.

The BDC might be handy, but not necessary.  I REALY like my Nikon Monarch!  With my 308 Encore its like shooting fish in a barrel at 100 yards!  Excellent scope!  Even my old Paw-in-Law likes it, and he's an old Leupold fan (nothing wrong with their rifle scopes BTW).
