short barreled 30-30?
« on: September 17, 2008, 01:01:20 PM »
I was thinking of making a short barrelled .30-30 carbine, and was wondering if you guys have any advice or even better pics of any shorty handis that youve set up.

the main purpose is just for a fun little pack/truck gun, and the fact that its a fun and affordable project.

Kinda like a katahdin tc, keeping the barrel length 16.5-20" not sure how short i really want to go.

Most likely going to put a thumbhole on it, and either open sites or a red dot.

ive just recently gotten back into these rifles after  a few years, just cant seem to stay away from them.  ;D

thanks guys

Dave

This has about a 18.5 inch barrel.  Larry

A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

very nice, I like the 94, I have mine set up as a scout too, and it really is nice for moving shots.

I just may have to get the handi and have it cut down, it think itll be a nice addition, and may just have to do the same and have a 12ga fitted for it as well, very good idea.

thanks for the replies.

Before I would cut down a 94 I beleave I would look around for a 94 trapper.
I bought mine a few years ago in as new condition for $300.00
They are a little more now I'm sure but still cheaper than buying a longer one and paying to have it cut and recrowned I would think.

I am really happy with my 16" 30-30 Winchester 94 Trapper. It shoots its favourite 150 gr load consistently under 2 MOA 5 shots at 100 yards with the Williams fiber optic open sights.

something i would look into might be a puma 92 but they are only available in pistol calibers.... a 16" barreled 30-30 would be comparable to a 16" barreled 357 mag

Stumpjmpr, is  close to being on the mark.In my loading for a 16 1/2 inch 30-30 and a 16 in 357(Rossi 92) using a 170gr fngc in the 30-30 , versus a 180gr lbtgc in the 357 ,the 30-30 was only @200fps faster, than the 357.
As an aside the 357 got there with a lot less powder: ie:  30 grains for the 30-30,and 16.5 grains for the 357.

hrm, well I already have a .357 levergun.

well maybe ill just keep the barrel length the way it is, I dont really want to loose too much snuff.

ill have to contemplate this some more.

thanks again
