NEF BC or Handi 45/70 action strength
« on: September 14, 2008, 05:13:39 AM »
I really miss having a 45/70! While I have owned a C Sharps, a Marlin and a Pedersoli..life has changed and I can no long afford them.  I can however maybe spring for  a NEF BC...
Here is the question.  I have never owned one and wonder how they are strength of action wise.  Can you shoot "Marlin" loads through them....40,000cup or better?  Are they rifled for heavy bullets?  I read on one of the threads that they are mostly designed for jacketed rounds.  True?
I really would value your thoughts and opinions

Ruger M77 243, Browning B2000, Ruger 22's, Ruger Red Hawk, SBlackhawk, Savage 223 Target...about 20+rifles less than I used to have. :-(

See What load level for the 45-70 in the FAQs and Help sticky. Most shooters stick to trapdoor loads in 45-70 due to the recoil, the BC even more so due to the butt style, but 40kcup levergun loads are fine if you can stand them.  I have five H&R 45-70s, I've shot cast bullets thru 3 of them, as long as they're sized right for the bore they should shoot fine, I doubt .458" cast bullet would shoot well, but .459" and .460" should work great as they do for me.

If you can stand 40k level loads in the BC you are more man than me.  However, you are safe up to lower Ruger level loads.

I've shot low Ruger's in my BC and yes the kick is noticeable, but it didn't hurt the BC at all (left a healthy bruise on me after ten rounds).  My guess would be the action on the BC will take more than you can.

Tye I've seen the lunatic rounds your using, I really don't think my 550 gr loads kick like your 720's, but then I think I'm twice your size so maybe the recoil only LOOKS worse.

DC, don't know what loads you plan to shoot with 40,000 CUP from the BC, but:
Was just looking through Lyman's 48th and for the Marlin '95, here's some MAXIMUM CUP's
 ... 405gr JSP - 46gr RX7 ... 27,100
 ... Lyman 457193 (405gr) ... 48gr N130 ... 27,300

So ... What is your reference source(s) for 40,000 PLUS CUP recipes?
I have the feeling you were knocking down too much Wild Turkey when you banged the keyboard with the 40,000 number or was it a typo?  Other folks might call your CUP figure ... 'A Walking Eagle' number  ;)

Both Hodgdon and Hornady list 40kcup as the levergun limit, 50kcup for modern rifles, everyone else is somewhere below that, so it's real easy to be confused by 45-70 load limits. In reality, recoil is the limiting factor for most shooters and that is usually in the trapdoor to lower levergun level. As has been said, the SB2 frame will handle even Ruger level loads considering the 500S&W is a factory chambering.....how long the underlug will handle it is another matter! ;D

Hodgdon is the place for hot loads.

I try to limit myself to levergun loads.  But I have dabbled into the Ruger #1 area with no ill effect on the guns - my shoulder is another story though.   I dont imagine the guns could take that abuse all the time, some might take more of it, other might not like the first one.

Really though, even the levergun loads can exceed 3500ftlb of energy - which is more than enough to take any critter walking on earth with the right bullets.

I sure as heck don't wanna go after the big 5 with 3500 ft lbs of energy if I had another option.  It has been proven it can get the job done though.
