617 loves Stingers
« on: July 06, 2008, 02:09:33 PM »
I finally got some range time with my new S&W 617. It's a 10 shot 4" bbl. I tried about 12 different types of ammo thru it and it just loves the CCI stingers. I shot a 20 shot 1-1/2" group at 15 yards with the open sights. And so close to point of aim that I may not even touch the sights, one more session will tell. It's like this gun and ammo were designed for each other.

I have a couple of 617s and I have found they shoot much better after putting a few hundred rounds of copper washed high speed stuff to smooth and break in the barrels. It helps to burnish the residual roughness in the barrels left from manufacturing. If you do this, you may want to repeat your ammo tests. It may shoot many loads much better than the first time.

After possibly 30,000 rounds, I don't think my bore needs any smoothing?

I have a 6"617 and I have had great groups with all but Rem sub sonic. I have not tried the stingers, will check it out. I now have 3 grandsons, so I need to buy 2 more 617's, I believe they are that good.

I stocked up on Stingers today at the local gun show. I picked up 2 bricks of 500 rounds @ $52 each. I offered the guy $100.00 but he wouldn't budge. Still thats cheaper than Wal-Mart and no sales tax to boot. It more than saved me the 7 dollar entrance fee.

are you sure that 617 can handle those hyper velocity .22 loads?  you don't want to beat it up too much with hot ammo.   j/k, i've got a 617 also, never tried stingers because i'm too cheap.  i use it mainly for subsonic stuff that doesn't cycle in a semi auto.
