44 magnum....which frame to use?
« on: September 17, 2008, 04:02:36 PM »
I just got a 44mag barrel and was wondering which of my frames to fit it to. It fits pretty well on both a 270 frame and a 12ga frame that I have, either one will probably need slight fitting on the latch shelf but neither seems like it will be more work than the other. I haven't tried closing them on a feeler guage yet. Am I correct in thinking that I can use a 44mag on the shotgun frame? If so that is the way I'll fit it. I kinda hate to even take the 270 apart... it shoots so well I'm afraid I'll mess it up. any opinions?

I'M sure others can answer your question better than me for all the right reasons.
Myself I don't like putting rifle barrels on shotgun frames.
I know that some of the H&Rs came that way but being that you have a SB2 frame I would use that one just to be safe.
You never know when you might want to use some hot loads that the shotgun frame might not take.

Using a rifle barrel on an SB1 frame isn't recommended, H&R just started offering the 357 and 44 mags on SB1 frames this, but they have small firing pins and the surrounding hole, they also won't fit any other barrels to those frames except shotgun barrels. They won't fit ANY rifle barrels to SB1 frames except the 45-410 barrel.
Please read the FAQs info on frame differences, there a substantial difference in frame strength, I agree with Longtom's advice, since you have an SB2 frame, use it for the 44mag barrel and be safe.  ;)
