SP101 misfire
« on: June 02, 2008, 05:57:35 AM »
My lovely little spouse recently forced me to allow her to purchase a Ruger SP101 2 1/2 in .357 mag. It has factory installed crimson trace lasergrips and was purchased new from a local dealer. Occasionally she gets a misfire where the firing pin makes a light, off-center strike on the primer or no strike at all.

My question is, could this be caused by her not fully releasing the trigger after the previous shot? She has been shooting mostly .38 spl, Remington or Winchester loads and is fanatical about keeping it clean.

I called Ruger cs today, but they couldn't offer any suggestions and told me to send it in for tech eval.

Anybody else had this problem or have a suggestion? Thanks,JR

I have the same SP101 in a .357 that is my primary "carry gun"; it has never failed to fire to date. Send it in and let Ruger fix it; this is not a common problem with any of Ruger's revolvers and I've used and seen used literally hundreds of their products over the years on pistol ranges.

I agree. Return it to Ruger. A misfiring revolver is rare. It needs professional examination and repair.

It is not caused by a flawed manipulation of the trigger.

I'd have to agree with you on this one-she has to be short stroking the trigger!  It has to be released fully or you'll not get a good strike! :) I've had mine for two years and it goes bang every time!!

Have you shot it? Does it do it when you shoot it?
