Bought my first pump yesterday!
« on: November 06, 2010, 01:21:51 PM »
Hey everybody, I just had to tell you that I'm the newest member of the pump rifle club! ;D
I picked up a Remington 760 in 30-06 yesterday from a pawnshop. It's been there for a while because the V9-II Weaver scope had a heavy coat of dust on the lens.
According to what I could find on the internet, the gun was made in Jan.1974. It's got a really nice piece of walnut on the butstock. When I got it home I completely disassembled it and cleaned and lubed everything. The O-ring for the slide was bad so I replaced it and that really helped to take the rattle out of the forend. I took the see-through mounts off and installed a Weaver base. I also had a set of low Weaver rings (made in USA) of the correct vintage for the rifle and installed a Leupold 2.5-8 VX-III scope. I can't wait to try this gun out, I sure hope it shoots good!
When I was a kid, I had an uncle that was a big influence on me. He had on old Remington 760 in 30-06 and he always got his share of game each year with it. I have always thought I'd like to have a rifle like my uncle used.

GOOD SHOOTING!

I can understand your excitement, I bought my daughters 7600 in .243win and will be hunting with it this fall. I seam to like it better than my Marlins. I benched the rifle and with remington core locks shot a honest 1/2 group at 100yards. The 7600 shoots right along with my bolt savage in 308.

If you have  a PSAT recoil shield take it to the range with you. The only down side to a 760/7600 is their felt recoil seems more than a bolt action. In the field you never notice it. My son has a 760 30-06 (was mine) and he's got the same scope with a post & duplex reticle.

Thanks guys,
So far I've put over a hundred rounds through it and the recoil to me is not bad at all. I guess I've shot to many heavy loaded 45-70's and 500 S&W rounds out of light weight rifles. ;D

Hey DAD, I've probably got too many Marlins, they are among my favorites but this 760 is going to take some hunting time away from them. My gun isn't shooting near as good as yours right now, about 2" or a little less @ 100 yards. Plenty good enough for deer hunting but when season is over I'll see if I can find a more accurate load for it.

Great rifle!!! That Weaver might bring some bucks on eBay.
