Tikka 512S
« on: September 25, 2008, 05:26:29 PM »
Greetings,
I'm a new registrant to this forum, but have been reading archived posts for some time. I have a Tikka 512S double rifle in 9.3x74R which I plan to use on a moose hunt next month. A  post from several years ago included a link for a Valmet 412 manual, which has apparently expired. Any chance this could be resurrected? I'm sure there are other owners who could use this information. Also, does anyone have experience reloading this round? Is it possible to load lower-power cartridges with cast bullets for practice purposes? At $50.00 - $65.00 per box, Norma's Oryx 285 gr. loads are a little pricey for plinking.
Thanks for any input anyone can provide.

Welcome to the board.

IM me your email and i will gladly send you the 412 owners manual.

Cabelas has the Norma 9.3x74r ammo on sale and if you have a store close to you you can always do a ship to store.

Lower power loads?  Why not!

I have an old Swedish cape-gun in 16 ga & 9.3 X 57R.  I load it with a 250gr cast bullet from a Rapine mould, and Blackpowder ('cause it's an old gun.)

One trick I used to make up small game loads is to wrap the unsized cast bullet in TEFLON gasfitters tape, and load over a modest charge of UNIQUE or something similar.  I have tried Universal Clays and HERCO.  A pinch of Dacron "teddy bear guts" keeps the powder to the bottom of the case.  The reason for teflon, according to Mike Venturino, in a series of articles about 30 years ago, is that Alox based lubes and copper fouling do not mix.  NRA research back in the 60's & 70's stressed thorough cleaning when changing from one to the other.  Teflon tape gives normal grouping, even when changing from cast to jacketed bullets.

Point if Impact, even at 25 yards is different, usually lower, than your full power loads.  In many of my rifles, including my Brno 304, I use the lower point of a `duplex`reticle pattern, with the scope power at about 4.

Thank you, Sir Charles, for the reloading hints; I like your ideas. And thank you, dougk, for the offer of the Valmet manual.
