FASTEST SIGHT?
« on: July 23, 2008, 01:51:28 AM »
What do you consider the best sight when you only have time for a quick shot on game ?
For those who use open or peep sight ,which do you prefer for the front sight ?bead or post
Thanks for your replies

Ask any African PH.

The open vee rear (not a buckhorn) express sight on the barrel in combination with a bold front bead, like Ivory or a bright Fibre-optic.

Red dot, it just doesn't look cool.  I may do it though.

That's what I had always heard and the system I had put on my 338/06.  However, I seem to remember an article written by the late Finn Aaguard on this subject.  I may be wrong but I think he decided that all you need is a front sight; just as accurate and faster then anything else.  'course as far as accuracy goes I'll bet he used his old 375 H&H, and if he did, it wouldn't be what one would call a completely objective study...  ;D  Heckova good read anyway.

On lever actions that are carbine length it's a peep for me, and unscrewing the peep and leaving a ghost ring is even faster for me.  I like the bead myself.

2.5 scope with a big retical. When I use a peep I never use a bead. It leads to confusion. Does it hit at the top of the bead or the center. No ambiguity with a nice square top post.

personaly i think theres very little differnce in any of them. the speed comes from familariztion and with practice. Use any of them enough and you can get very fast.

Across the entire range of shooting conditions, with adequate practice, a low-powered scope mounted low over the bore is the fastest sight for aimed fire.  Reticle choice is something of an individual preference.  The key in all cases is practice and familiarity with the rifle/sight combination.

Just consider what competitive shooters and the military have chosen over the last 10 years or so -- some sort of scope or optical sight has become standard even in the speed events.

red dot like Holo
Keep both eyes focused on target, bring up weapon, dot appears on target and fire.
Great for old eyes.

Has anyone else noticed that with a one power scope the image looks a little smaller than without the scope?  I have a 1-4 Redfield variable and to get the image to look the same as without I set it on 2X. Set on 2.5X the image appears just slightly enlarged and thats the way I use it when I want speed.

+1 for crabo...Red dot is fast...Just doesn't look right on a lever. I prefer the reflex sight by trijicon. More reliable because it doesn't need batteries. On my 1895 Marlin 45-70, I have a Pentax 1.75-5 power scope mounted low over the bore with Quick release rings. I have express sights with an ivory bead front as a back-up. Peeps are nice and more precise than open sights, but if something is bearing down on me to either eat me or stomp me into the ground, I don't want to take the time to locate him through that little hole.

On a 336 I would like a Trijicon 1.25-4x24 Accupoint scope. But, for pure speed at short range I believe the red dot type of 'scope' is the fastest. But it just looks WRONG on a lever action.

I agree with Lloyd on this one. All sights can be fast, you just got to get familiar with'em. On my 45 trapper I have a 1.5x4.5 shotgun scope in quick detachable rings and love it. When set on 1.5 you can leave both eyes open and get on target extremely fast. I was a  army grunt for 9yrs and became very familiar with a m-16, after a few years of shooting at pop-up targets at close range I didn't use sights. I could do this out to about 50 meters. This was a great advantage at dark or when in a gas mask. Just throw the rifle up, double tap, target down. When you eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom with your rifle, you will get familiar with it.  Dave

You didn't provide "Open" as an option, so I voted "other".  Old fashioned buckhorn sights are almost as closed as a peep, and slow for me.  I find red dots to be a close second to open sights.

When I had young eyes I don't think it mattered much. I could shoot fast with almost any sight. As I age I prefer a 3x leupold. Seams the fasted for me now. I am expermenting with a EOteck sight, but the vertic is still out. I have tried round tubed red dot sights and did not care for them.

Yes the low powered scope for me. Regards, Byron

I agree with billmac, I think a 2.5x -4x scope with a large reticle gives me faster focus . I've used receiver sights and buckhorns, like em, but prefer the scope.
That said, one lever I've got, a Browning Centennial 92, I'm limited to buckhorn.

Well for my TCW, I believe the peep with the center left off, leaving a ghost ring.  I also like the large front gold bead, dull in color.  It catches enough light to easily be seen in almost all lighting conditions.  And one can easily see the path of game after the recoil has removed the eye from the sight picture.  On moving game, this is a necessity. The very shallow v and large bead used on DG hunting for fast shooting is excellent for large target area, not for deer size game at 100 yds moving fast.  It just isn't quite accurate enough for such a small vital target, though one can still see the game well.  The low power scopes work well enough, but on a lever gun, I still think the peep sight is best.

1.5 power scope or red dot are the fastest, ghost ring peep is right there with them.  DP

!st the gun must fit you, no sight is any quicker if the rifle doesnt fit you, with that said I like a low powered scope myself.   JIM
