Mossberg 500 problem.
« on: April 06, 2006, 09:35:42 AM »
My son's shotgun seems to have a problem with the magazine spring.  It will take two 2 3/4 shells but will not take two 3in shells. The spring looks to be wadded up.  How do you remove the spring?  Thanks, oktx.

1. Most east coast shotguns have a plug in the mag tube that limits you to two rounds. It should take the 3 inchers though.
2. You remove the barrel and the spring should pop out from the end of the mag tube.

This one is different than my 870.  It does not seem to unscrew at the end of the magazine.  Just a hole where the barrel screws into it.

it has a pressure-cap. insert a flat end screw driver into the slot in the end of the magazine tube after you take the barrel off. and wiggles it and see the end pop out pretty quickly.

it will come out at approximately the speed of light so get ready by having your hand over the end so it doesn't hit you in the eye.

i would just call mossberg or a gun dealer and ask for a new spring...sounds like yours is kinked or something.

should only cost a few bucks. reinstallation is the same, just push that cap back in.

Don't stick a screwdriver anywhere! The Moss. 500 is not at all like an 870. After you remove the bbl the mag tube unscrews from the face of the action. The spring comes out when it is removed from the action, so hold on or it'll fly!

I tried to unscrew the magazine tube and nearly had stroke trying to get it to break free.  I also have a Mossberg 500 turkey, and I could not get it to unscrew either.  Any tips, short of a pipe wrench?  Thanks, oktx.

On the 500 (unlike the 590), you DO have to unscrew the mag tube from the receiver. The barrel-lug end plug is permanently attached and should not be messed with. Most mag tubes have Loc-Tite on the threads where they screw into the receiver. On mine, I took a propane torch and CAREFULLY heated the receiver until the Loc-Tite broke loose and was able to unscrew the mag tube with very firm hand pressure. Don't get the aluminum receiver too hot!. Just heat it up til the Loc-Tite breaks loose. It works. To save trouble the next time, I didn't bother puting Loc-Tite back on the threads when reassembling. The tube can't back out with the barrel on anyway.

I'm kinda a hillbilly, but. Mossy's use a wooden dowel for a plug. Mabe it's a tad long? you gotta kinda shake it out of the hole to take a gander at it.
